Anybody out there use a power washer on their equipment? Which power washers are recommended? I've looked at Karcher, Kodiak, Stihl, etc. What size (gal/min and psi) does a good job on tractors and implements? Do you like electric motor or engine driven?

I have a small electric Karcher that works well for my needs. I asked the mechanic at the JD dealer about washing it down with a power washer and he said it was fine EXCEPT:
Make sure engine is off if you plan on washing the engine. He said he'd seen rods bent from the smallest amount of water getting through the air cleaner, and indiscriminate use of a power washer can force the water into places it should not go.
He also advised that I re-grease all of the Zirk fittings since the power washer will also displace the grease and start rusting things. ....

I think you will find there is much more power and range with the gas driven engines. Make sure you get a Honda engine on it if you do (avoid Briggs). I have a professional Generac model with a 6.5 HP Honda engine. Yes, it will do damage if you are not careful but that just means using the right tips and pressure. It sure takes off the dirt. I just used it to wash an old deck and it was an incredible difference afterwards. And yes, regreasing is recommended after. ....

Thanks for the messages fella's. To keep this going, what's more important....the pressure or the flow.....or the product of the two (the cleaning units)? I've also heard that for long term durablity, a pump in which the oil can be changed is a good thing to have. Many of the less expensive washers apparently do not have this feature. Any experience here? ....

Jeff--I purchased a commercial belt-driven power washer from Northern Hydraulics. For routine washing the tractor, deck, etc., I find that 13 hp (Honda), 3500 psi and 4 gallons/minute is overkill. Also, I found that it really steams the wife when she is in the shower and I fire up the pressure washer (only did that one time!). Should you look at 9+ hp, I would also make sure it has an unloader (makes starting the gas engine easier) as well as thermal bypass (just letting the engine run without pulling the trigger can really heat up the water in the pump) and a safety relief valve (so if the water gets too hot in the pump, it dumps it on the ground). There are arguments that can be made for a General pump vs. a Cat pump, a Honda engine vs. a Briggs Commercial engine, and also direct drive vs. belt drive. Should you decide to purchase a power washer from Northern, I recommend that you ask them where you get service on it should something break during the warranty period--its very expensive to ship a 150 pound tool back to them for repair. Honda engine warranties can usually be honored locally, however. Good luck. Mike S. ....

I bought a Campbell Hausfeld 6 hp Brigs that generated 2100 psi at 2 gpm last spring. I loaned it to a neighbor last fall, and then put it in the basement without trying it for the winter. When I did try it last month, it wouldn't generate any pressure. It turns out the wobble bearing went out. Although it was out of warranty, Campbell Hausfeld sent me a complete replacement pump at no charge.
Lessons learned:
Don't loan out power equipment to neighbors???
Campbell Hausfeld earned my respect for support beyond the warranty
Think about local service. Had I not fixed it myself, I would have had to
go 2 hours away for a dealer.
Don't let the warranty lapse before checking out a product that sat several months.
As far as performance, I was disappointed that 2100 psi could not remove fly specks from my vinyl siding, even after soaking with soap. On pressure treated decks it works great, and can eat a hole through it if your so inclined.

I have found this very interesting. I did not order a tractor, mail order. I went to a place I could go back to "EYE-TO-EYE" and yell (If I have to) about... When I bought a pressure washer My friends told me what a great deal at the tractor supply or hyds place and wally world etc.(now one of them is broke and can not get parts, someone else mentioned this also) they also told me gas bigger better etc... I got my yellow pages checked local dealers and the line they have. When to the internet sites and checked those. Called the local dealer for a demo and what they as proffessionals thought I would need. Bought a Hotsy with 110V. More money, better warranty, better service, more satistfaction... I use it on every thing house, deck, lawn mowers, tractors, tractor trailer and cars. Bottom line ask a expert and buy what you want or need. One thing gas engines need maintence. Electric plug in and go no fus no muss... Enjoy shopping ....
