One way I have found to lift 3ph implements with the loader is to put the cutting edge of the loader under the lower link pins/brackets, then put a pin through the top link mast and run chain around the bucket to pin you just put in(you will find that if you get a large enough chain/hook you can slip the hook over the cutting edge then the chain around the bucket). You will then find that when you curl the bucket back the chain tightens and lifts the implement up with the cutting edge carrying the load. This can be done with many other objects also once you understand where to place the cutting edge.
But always remember to stay clear of any object lifted no matter how confident you are of your means of attachment.

I've got a mid-80's Ford 1710, and it needs a minute or so of pre-heating. It's not normal, and I'm going to check the glow plugs. Glow plug contacts and grounds on old tractors can become corroded which adds to the circuit resistance and reduces the heating. I plan to clean the plug contacts and threads. I'll check the plugs when they are out. The wire can be attached, and the plug held against the engine. The plug should glow red when somebody operates the pre-heating switch. A plug, itself, is either good or bad. If it glows, it's good. I don't believe there is such a thing as a weak plug. However, batteries do get weak with age, and a bad battery will slow down the plugs. The tractor cranks well, so the battery isn't too bad, but I'll clean the battery connections and check the acid specific gravity anyway.

I'm trying to find information on aftermarket mid-mount mowers for the Kubota B2710. Are there any out there? Also, any good places to find used implements in or around lower Michigan?

Youre absolutely on the right track. I use Mobil Delvac 1 5-40 and there is a noticably reduced time for oil pressue to build up over heavier oils. You havent started a debate as far as I am concerned although others dont see the need for the added expense. Where is Mark, I know he will help out on this one.

oops let me correct my previous post. The #1 diesel has less viscosity and produces lower power than #2. I obviously mispoke myself in stating the #2 is thinner and provides less power. Sorry bout that

I have a 4600 JD and my revereser lever did the same thing. I had the dealer fix mine. The phone No. for the dealer is 1 800 530-2724. The mechanics name that fixed my tractor is "Little Bob",and the service manager is Don. Hope this helps.

Just got a new 2000 JD 4300 and it has been in the shop more than at my home. Started with a hydraulic leak which they fixed and now has two other problems. The main one is the rear pto engagement lever. I have no idea how this is to operate but on the JD 5400 I used to have, it was a long lever that you pushed down to engage and pulled back up to disengage. It operated smoothly in both directions with very little resistance. On this 4300 when you push the handle foreward it seems to be hard to push and kind of clicks into engagement. Here comes the real problem. When you pull back to disengage you have to pull hard with much resistance and then all of the sudden it lets go and disengages so fast that the belts on my mower squeal and the blades on my rotary cutter slam together. I had the dealer come take a look and they only said it is not supposed to operate that way and they will come get it and take a look. What is the normal feel and operation of this engagement lever?????? Anyone who can answer this please use my email address to respond.

Jeff--I purchased a commercial belt-driven power washer from Northern Hydraulics. For routine washing the tractor, deck, etc., I find that 13 hp (Honda), 3500 psi and 4 gallons/minute is overkill. Also, I found that it really steams the wife when she is in the shower and I fire up the pressure washer (only did that one time!). Should you look at 9+ hp, I would also make sure it has an unloader (makes starting the gas engine easier) as well as thermal bypass (just letting the engine run without pulling the trigger can really heat up the water in the pump) and a safety relief valve (so if the water gets too hot in the pump, it dumps it on the ground). There are arguments that can be made for a General pump vs. a Cat pump, a Honda engine vs. a Briggs Commercial engine, and also direct drive vs. belt drive. Should you decide to purchase a power washer from Northern, I recommend that you ask them where you get service on it should something break during the warranty period--its very expensive to ship a 150 pound tool back to them for repair. Honda engine warranties can usually be honored locally, however. Good luck. Mike S.

Some years ago I tried a well set up Dalco 3000, which at that time was a little more capable than their large Magnatrac. I was impressed until I tried a little bitty old beat up orange 4wd compact tractor with a loader. I think it was an old tired Kubota 5100. The compact tractor was not only cheaper, but was clearly better in every regard even though only half the size. Sorry, but that is how I saw them. If you don't like the compacts, Ingersoll Rand makes a little contractor's rubber tired loader/hoe for about the same price as the Magnatrac and it is a lot more machine. It doesn't lay track, though.

Ken, those are excellent prices. I priced buckets last Fall when I ripped mine and for awhile I couldn't see how to fix it. It is a medium duty 12" for a little 7 foot depth 3pt backhoe. All of the buckets that I found ran between $350 to $600 depending on who made it. One company who made a lot of buckets for Kubota and JD had one at around $350....so I went and looked at it. Way too light duty for my little hoe - half the strength of the one that I ripped - and I think that most hoes are stronger than mine.
I finally figured out that I could use the backhoe hydraulics and some chain to straighten out my bucket and while it was being held that way I torched the bent areas out and re-welded it. Better than new!
BTW, the best way I've found to rip a bucket is to hook a big rock and keep pulling on it with one tooth.

A few postings back I mentioned the steiner LS340 sweeper. I don't know if you had time to look at it but you can off set it to the left, right or set it to follow the tractor. If you off set it you wouldn't have to drive over the walnuts to pick them up. I think they will come out to demo it at you loacation. Steinerturf.com"

The current thread on power-washing reminds me that I've been thinking about getting either a power washer or steam cleaner for awhile now. Does anyone use a steam cleaner? Makes and models? Any advice or comparison between the two?

Skid plates do sink a little into the gravel, but they make it much easier to prevent picking up and grading off gravel, if you're careful. If the snow depth is 12" or less, I like to plow with the blade in the reverse position. that way it floats across the top of the gravel or asphalt and doesn't dig in. This doen't work well however for deeper snow.

I have a YM165D with the factory loader which I bought new in 1981 or so. It is a dandy little tractor and very rugged. I've done a ton of work on my small acreage with it and the only thing it has needed in 20 years is batteries and brakes. I run chains on all four wheels and quite a bit of extra weight for traction. Although I work it hard, it still looks and runs nice. Your price sounds very reasonable. I sure wouldn't sell mine for that, and it doesn't have the mower or snow thrower.....which I could buy for about 1000 to 1500 for the pair on the used market.
Parts are not a problem. Yanmar maintains a warehouse in the US and there are still lots of oldtime Yanmar dealers who order from there. You can even still get plastic parts and decals.
Everything has a downside. The downside to the Yanmar YM165D is that it is physically a small tractor. If you are a average or larger size guy, then you are going to look like a gorilla on a tricycle when you drive it around. Make that a Grinning Gorilla on a tricycle..... Not a pretty picture! The first time my wife saw me driving ours she laughed so hard she had to hang onto the side of the barn to keep from falling down. 20 years later she won't let me sell it...

I recently did a repair on my Hinomoto E14D right front outboard gear box. The gears were chewed and housing was cracked. I did a weld repair on the housing, put in new gears and u-joint assembly. I got her working great for a couple of days and the 4WD failed again. I have not gone back in to inspect my repair work. But I suspect that another weak point failed. The axle shaft splines and differential gears and bearings looked good during the repair. Any ideas where I should look for the next most likely failure point?

While your changing your fluids dont forget the Front drive axle,there are 3 drain plugs & 1 fill hole,there are oil level plugs that you fill to. It calls for 85W-140 gear oil-4.2 qts
You should drain these oils when they are WARM for both axles
Also I talked to MTD & they told me as long as it was mixed at 50-50 the new
LONG LIFE antifreeze was acceptable.So far it has worked well.
