I have a 2100 sq ft home, with a roof that has lots of cuts in it. I paid $15,000 and did NOT replace the skylights, although it was recommended. I even asked my nephew who is a contractor and he recommended that, if you have the money, go ahead and replace the skylights. It is against my policy to replace things that are not broken so I am taking the risk with my old skylights :). I DID have new gutter caps installed as part of the $15,000.

What's your idea of 'trouble free Tractor ownership? One down-time incident/yr? Less, more? I seem to be around 1/yr in 15 years - hydro hoses(3, I think), bad fuel, front tires needed replacing, tach+hour meter died (required a new panel - $$s!), fuel line rotted out (twice now), plastic fuel cup didn't like anti-gel, control linkage pivots rusted up, Plus the periodic oil changes, greasing, mouse management, etc.

I heard of a guy -45 years ago now - who traded his car in every year. Never did ANY maintenance, including oil changes. Any issues were the next owner's problem. Next guy decides to try this, but at the end of the year decides to keep it...and gets stuck with a dog.

Back to tractors. Small, oldish tractors aren't loaded with complex electronics and are rugged and pretty easy to work on. You're not going to wear it out at a hundred hours/yr, where 'worn out' means an engine or tranny rebuild or even new tires. If you can't/won't work on your tractor and getting it repaired (and dong basic maintenance) is expensive and/or time-consuming, then I suppose trading it in every 5 years makes sense to some people.

"IF" your Ingersoll Case (lawn/garden) tractor is an older version and has Points instead of the newer CDI ignition, I suspect your conderser is failing. Replace it & she be ok. It's a common problem in older machines. The fix should be relatively cheap (parts wise) although getting to some things can be time consuming.

You folks are very knowledgeable and I am very cautious about introducing sweat to my portly demeanor.

Testing is a good thing work is not at least to me. And that is what made me curious about the lime thing.

When I was a kid stores had big pallets of the stuff.

Ok now decades later checking all the Lowes in my area they list hurry supply low or 5 bags in stock.

Here is my theory. Many homeowners do not do their own work and are lazy or ignorant and just want to get done the so called easy way. And the stores do not want to stock bulky products that take up lots of room and have low turnover and low margins.

Bag mulch must have a different demand curve so that customers like the instant gratification it gives the gardeners because they stock tons of it.

When I was a teen I worked for a landscaper. He had a clients that had postage stamp yards, and each was a marquee example of perfection. He did not do the soil test, but every March the crew hand leaf raked the yard, limed and fertilized and seeded with bluegrass. Fantastic results.

In classic Fatguy form I have managed to ponder this so long that the window for lime application has really passed, right ? or maybe there is time for more pondering before it too late for this season.

But seriously I may just buy the last bag from the local Lowes and do a test spot right infron of the front door for chuckles ;-)

theres also 2 versions,2 different dip sticks,old version has a straight dip tube,newer version has a curved dip tube.old version has a looped pull on it,new version has a knob pull

forgot to post it but i did find a fluid level plug,after numerous times looking for it theres 2 hydraulic lines that lay beside the clutch pedal that go to the power steering,i pulled the lines away from the gear box and behold there it was and i was only about 1/2 qt low

glad you found the issue,my mom has dementia too,the hardest part is all the lessons learned growing up from them and seeing them slowly fade,hard to correct them too,my mom gets really angry if i try to correct something she did or if she still tries to be independant and she cant,when she repeats the exact same statement 10 times in a rowi act as if its the first time she said it.this is all off the beaten path of tractors but we all have parents and grandparents and were all human first

as was mentioned i would check for a fuel issue,have you owned it for a while and this just happened or did you just obtain it?drain the tank and change the fuel filter for starters,funny you mentioned the hydraulic filter,my 1984 kioti with power steering bogs down if i make a sharp left turn,dont know if its the power steering that puts more strain on the engine or not but if i steer by pushing the left brake it doesnt do it,no inclines where i live so dont know about that,maybe someone will post with an answer

Kthompson makes a Very valid point on the battery being the first place to start. I occasionally get ahead of myself. Come to think about it I had to replace a battery which showed adequate voltage readings but, was very deficient when any substantive load was attached. A bad battery can give you erroneous readings and waste incredible amounts of both time/money.
On the flip side... I have run into safety interlock circuitry which was wired in series ultimately providing a path to ground. This meant there was no voltage readings at the individual components. In this particular situation, (to diagnose the problem), each component had to be unwired and their function had to be confirmed with an ohm meter. It's too late in my life to acquire more sophisticated diagnostic tools.
Precisely where you start can be very baffling especially w/o a wiring diagram. It's much easier (not necessarily faster) IF you have the tractor's wiring diagram accessable.
I'm old now. Kids in grade school know more about the modern electronics than I do. I am on this site primarily to read the discussions. I'm going back to just reading & learning how it should be done.

I am sorry but as I hit submit forgot this: you may know this and if you do great but if not don't want an accident. DO NOT REMOVE THE HOSES with the loader raised. It will fall and spraying fluid as it does. Hyd oil under pressure is dangerous.
Lower the front end loader full and have the bucket flat also. Cut off the tractor and break the pressure which means work the loader lever each direction to release the pressure,would do 2 or 3 times.

Well when I first posted here had recently bought a Kubota M6800 that I wanted a boom mower for. As some others have posted began changing towards retirement last fall as I said good by to the last of farming, at least the raising of the crop. The M6800 was hauled to a friends lot for sale this past Saturday. Did find a good boom mower at a great deal and have sold it to a nephew as will no longer have tractor larger enough for it.

Art as you travel I-95 you will pass about 50 miles to my west as you pass Florence SC. I never did get the second rear remote for my M6800 but did not make that mistake with my next two tractors. always found your advice short to the point and right on. If you ever will be taking a slow trip and would like to meet give me notice and would like to. Would be very willing to meet you along I 95. Kenneth

No idea where I have read the simple instruction to retract all cylinders possible. That pushed the oil from cylinder back to the transmission or tank as the case maybe. If you were to remove the front end loader how would you change the oil in it? You want to change as much of the oil as you can when you do change it.

Not Murf here but I love the smell of Diesel fuel ! Little soot markings is fine in my book as long as it is not smoking after it warms up... just my 2 cents

Ditto to all the great points.

Compaction is a critical ingredient and can be deceptive.

A rail to trail bike path I cycle on was resurfaced 4 years ago with dust and gravel mix. They used a vibratory roller on it in most sections. But one section was getting beat up by horse traffic but not the other sections, I even thought the material was different but it was the compaction.

After 4 years rain and settling it has finally compacted so no more horse hoof damage and it is smooth. So thorough compaction is critical, unless you are willing to wait for mother nature

I hope the bushings work for you. McMaster-Carr is an amazing resource. If you need tamper-proof, metric, pan head allen screws, they'll have them in your choice of about 20 lengths and five different materials. In my business, I couldn't do without them.

I guess you have a new rear mower? Did the you ever use the rear PTO for anything else like a brush hog? Does any rear PTO attachment work but not the new mower?The 955 last ones are from the late 1990 s so your tractor is at least 22 years old , original owner ?<br>

I have the sequence for the head bolts what im needing is the Torq specs for the bolts I haven't been able to find them. Any ideas on what would be a good range the engine is basically a 2 cylinder perkens, But ihavent been able to find any of the old torq specs for those ether.
