Hi all

I have a strange problem I need some help troubleshooting. I share a tractor with my grandfather who suffers from dementia. I am coming in behind him after he replaced a starter, which I believe is irrelevant to the problem.

I have 12 volts at the starter, but no voltage anywhere else that I can find. With the key on, no lights on the dash, no alarms, and no headlights. I did find a blown 15amp fuse and replaced it, but nothing changed and the fuse hasn't blown again.

I've looked for voltage with a multimeter at every pin connector and nothing anywhere be and the starter. The switch does seem to be working I checked it with a meter but there is no voltage present. The 40 amp fuse in line with the starter is good. I suspect a safety has failed but with no voltage present anywhere I don't know.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Actually, I'd suspect the starter replacement....

Starting at the battery, you have a really thick cable that's hooked to the negative terminal and is attached to the tractor frame or the engine. Make sure it's connected at both ends. This is not likely the issue.

There is a really thick cable that's hooked to the positive (red) battery terminal and goes straight to the starter. It's usually a ring terminal on the wire that's held down with a nut on a threaded post sticking out of the starter. I presume your father got this cable right. In most cases, the rest of the tractor's electrical is fed via a smaller wire that's connected to the same post on the starter. My guess is this is not connected to the starter post. If it is, trace it; there may be an inline fuse that's blown. It will generally head to the ignition switch as one of the wires on the switch will be the 12V feed for lights, instruments and when you turn the key to 'start'.

The service manual for your tractor should have a wiring diagram of some form in it. that will clarify the wiring The manual is usually a good investment if you plan on self-maintaining the tractor beyond changing the oil & greasing it. ....

Sounds like dementia or not your tractor had a starting issue. That model is new enough that likely has numerous safety switches.. seat and PTO engaged type.

As already advised checking everything to do with install of starter. See if you can temporarily bypass each safety switch.

You might also try buying a hand held starter switch for $15 to see if it cranks bypassing your electrical system.

You were exactly right. I spent all night wondering why I had voltage at the starter and no where else. This morning I went and checked and he had the wire that feeds the ignition and accessories on the second post of the solenoid, so no mechanical connection past that point. I also found a couple of other things that needed to be corrected that he had missed. ....

I suspect you are right as well. Once I had power to the ignition again I noticed the PTO was engaged, and the tractor will not start with the PTO engaged. While I was putting it back together my grandmother came over and she said she thinks he was trying to start it from the ground, so the seat safety switch would have kept it from starting as well.

I think that the original starting issue was just him forgetting all that.

My grandfather taught me more than any other single person in my life, so I tend to look for other problems first, which is probably why I didn't start with the starter.

I appreciate all the help, sorry for the double post and I didn't intend to quote myself either, new to the forum.

Thanks again I do appreciate the advice. ....

One more thing for a bit of perspective, my grandfather is nearly 90, both body and mind failing now. The fact he got as far as he did is pretty awesome in itself, I truly didn't mean to sound like I was faulting him in any way.

I wish he would let me know when he has a problem but he is used to doing things himself and doesn't like asking for help. ....

Any mechanical / electrical problem has so many if then else tree logic structures it is a challenge for any of us regardless of capabilities. And stepping in to an unfinished project makes it significantly tougher.

Is the battery & starter properly grounded? Are there any safety switches that are comprised?.- ie: switch under the seat or in gear or does the clutch need to be depressed in order to start. I once had a similar problem with a Kubota. I had a broken wire inside of the insulation of the wire leading to the dynamo. Drove me nuts but I finally found break. Good luck.

glad you found the issue,my mom has dementia too,the hardest part is all the lessons learned growing up from them and seeing them slowly fade, hard to correct them too,my mom gets really angry if i try to correct something she did or if she still tries to be independant and she cant, when she repeats the exact same statement 10 times in a rowi act as if its the first time she said it.this is all off the beaten path of tractors but we all have parents and grandparents and were all human first ....
