Alice Chalmer 917 What is this tractor I am thinking about buying it but I have not got a chace to look at it yet. The shopper said it has a 48in deck and a front end loader and a rototiller for $1500. At frist I thought is was a lawn mower but I dont know. If anyone knows anying thing please tell me.

Just an update...heard from the manufacturer who essentially has said much like you good folks have recommended, that we reverse the twist/torque/bend by lifting from the high side so we will give it a try. Roger, always appreciate your insight into these things and yes you are right, I can repair the tractor while repairing a friendship would be much more difficult.

I have read with interest people purchasing compact tractors with low hours. I am looking at a new holland 1925 with 1400 hours. This tractor seems to be in wonderful condition, with the exception of the number of hours. With proper maintenance how how can one expect these small diesel engines to last?

Lets see....A JD 1020....wasn't that a small 4 cylinder gasoline farm tractor built in the 1960's? What would now be called a small utility tractor? If so, they sure were a cute tractor. I never have owned one, but would like to someday. How does it stack up against the new 5210?

Here's how I set mine up (based on the dealer and the manual): Loosen up the top link (my cutter has an extra link in the top link connection to allow for some float). Set the cutter height with the lower arms and tail wheel. Set the top link loose to allow some additional downward tilt. I did this for cutting my very bumpy field and it worked fine. The cutter and tractor could pitch a bit relative to each other as we went over dips and high spots. I did lift it for tight turns then set it down again as I straightened out. I'm sure the same scheme will work when I get the field smoothed out and planted again. I do tighten the top link when I transport for some additional clearance. Hope this helps, Rob.

Duane, I paid extra for a heavy duty bucket when I bought my L3710 and I'm glad I did. I don't know if a heavy bucket is available for yours but you might want to invest in a bolt on tooth bar instead. I understand the tooth bar makes the loader bucket quite a bit stouter. I have an e-mail address around here somewhere for a guy that sells tooth bars for around $250, if you're interested, let me know and I'll dig it up.

, it may be to your advanatage and piece of mind to take a technique from the transit industry. Many now are painting index lines on wheel nuts and wheels after they are properly torqued. If one should start to back off, then the index lines will be out of alignment. This technique also permits a visual check and can be done each time you go to use the tractor. I have done this on my JD790, not that I have had a problem, but I do find the front loosening up on the front after extended use of loader.

I don't know much about the price of a JD850 in poor condition as you are describing. I do know that the 850 is a gear tractor vs. an 855 hydrostatic transmission. 2wd is a less than desireable trait in compact utility tractors.
Considering the condition of the tractor, gear drive and condition of the impliments I would not make the purchase at that price. I would not make that purchase.

I'm having some warranty work done on my <br>TC25 and the dealer let me use a 1530, which is suppose to be the same tractor just a year or two older but there is a big difference in power!! So when I asked they said the TC series tractors had to meet new pollution regs.,so I took another TC25 for a test run and it,s the same dog as mine,the 1530 engine is noisy and it smokes alot, but the extra power sure is nice. Oh they both had 275hrs.So if your planning on trading for a new one maybe consider going to a 29 or 33 to get the same performance your use to. Peder

A friend once told me that, "It's not so much what you drive, it's how well you drive it that counts". You seem to be doing great and and the main thing is that you are enjoying it. I know I was amazed at what I could get done with one of these little machines, in my case a Kubota. Projects that once seemed too large for me to tackle on my own are now managable, to the extent that I spend almost as much time helping friends and family with their little around the house jobs. Ah, compact tractors are FUN to work (play) with, aren't they?

Mark,I am no help on filling the tires,but if you are as satisfied with your 4300 as I am with my 4400 HST 4x4,you will be quite pleased,its enjoyable to just get out and work with the tractor!!!!

Dunno if it would work or not, but it might be interesting to look at the site below. It's a commercial duty vacuum rig, has a special plastic impeller that is alledgedly bullet-proof. Runs about $1000, but would be generally useful. I kinda want one myself, for collecting and composting leaves, just ain't got the spare grand...

Considering of purchase of either TC45D with super steer, 4x4, loader, hoe --or a Deere 4600 similiary equiped. Any one with pros or cons speak up. Looks like the Deere loader lifts more lbs than the Ford but see lots of messages here about axle problems. Plan to use machine for landscape business. I wonder how it will be determined if my 430 loader needs a safety kit? As for Kay's negative comment about us whiners--I wonder how patient and quiet Kay would be if Kay had saved hard-earned money to purchase an automobile that had a flaky transmission, brakes that locked up, a lousy front end and a bad differential, along with a few other issues and had to put up with 19 months of exasperation and frustration due to the manufacturer failing to properly engineer the product, failing to properly field test the product AND exercising poor quality control? Maybe Kay would send the manufacturer roses, but this person goes to his attorney in a couple of weeks to explore potential litigation against JD because it is time for the whining to cease from me (to Kay's relief)! looks like you got a lot of questions. I believe most of them are answered in the post, but in general JD never had a recall. They made up a kit for those that seemed to know the problem and had good dealers. The dealer has to get the kit for you and JD pays him so many hours to install. I installed my own kit. JD had Dana design the front end and they screwed up by eliminating the ackerman effect of turning. In short the outer wheel turning has to turn at a different radius. Kit includes the complete front end, new pump and steering control, pressure line.

Bolton Power Equipment (www.boltonpowerequip.com) makes a PTO based trencher capable of 6" wide and 12" deep. It costs $1495, and requires at least 21 hp. Never used one, but I am thinking I might buy one. I need to put in a new irrigation system for about 250 trees. If anyone has used this device, please comment.

I will bet your problem is the same as I have noticed
on my 2910. My leg pushes the big orange cruise control
knob over just enough to block reverse. The cruise works
OK, But it sure is in the way. Too many trips to the dinner
table maybe part of my problem.

I got a price today from a dealer on the L3010 4WD/HST with the LA481 loader, HD bucket, ROPS, and loaded R4s of $19500. This too seems high compared to what others have posted here. It seems like New Hampshire area dealers are quite a bit more expensive then other areas of the country. The L3010 certainly looks rugged though.
