Thanks for the response Gatoraider. 3K is a "bit steap." I am willing to pull the transaxle out and replace the gears if the parts are available for individuals to purchase. Can I buy these parts from a JD dealer?

I think the shifter slots when both are in neutral with be in line with each other, forming a rectangle.

Do be careful in checking this as it is easy to want to stand beside the tractor and it running to see if it is shifting properly with the top plate off...don't.

Yes I think it will short term hurt Toyota but depending on what is proven it could help or hurt.

But based upon accidents in US vechiles and repairs on them, GM and certainly Chrysler have no opportunity to live at our house. Ford...maybe.

Frank, even well dried, just few boards and my poor old machine would never get off the ground, especially with my gravitationally challenged butt in the mix!!

I too like the Oaks, when I bought the house I'm in now one of the first things I did was get rid of a lot of the flooring and all of the mill-work. MDF, blech!!!

I did the family room (below) out of the 'left-overs' from a job I did for a guy a few years back. Lots of shorts, but for a pegged floor that works out just fine.

I'd call the dealer's service manager and ask him what the code means---without having an expensive service call or inspection, then go from there. Usually, for me, dealers are nice enough to give you frre info knowing you'll be back if the solution is beyond your ability or you will come back to buy parts.

Auerbach, about 25 or 27 years back had a supervisor who in telling his employment histroy said ever company I have worked for has gone out of business.So did that one and the next two he worked for. The one I worked for was at that time the largest in the world in their industry.

Can still tell you the guy's name Steve Han... Just in case there is another.

He was one of the smartest book wise people I have ever met to have no common sense, or if so keep it safe.

Well the guy came out and replaced the float. $445 for an hours work. Seems like a rip but at least it's done. He said the old pump had puked it's guts out and dumped oil in the tank. Figures.

It sounds like it's not old enough to have a worn needle. You may have a pin hole in the float or a piece of dirt in the needle/seat area.

That is a great old moon buggy. Unfortunately most parts will become unavailable to your local dealer within a year or two. Start there and scarf up anything you can. Vintage parts is a place to start for new plastic. I will find the link if you are interested.

I hate that carb setup. First thing to ask is where is the gator from? Emission compliant engine, in its hay day tuned just barely the fuel to keep running at idle. surely way out of spec with just a few mils of corosion. In cold wheather dealers were forced to rejet out of the crate. There is an idle adjustment just below the breather. need to drive in a small pick and pry out the aluminium plug. back that out 1/2 to 3/4 turn and you should be in business. But once you smooth it out there are two idle speed adjustments. One on your carb set to 900 so it dont stall. screw under the steel plate where the cable and governer lives need to be 1000 to 1050 so you dont junk out your clutch. Hope this helps

That's about the time it takes for the engine to use up what's in the fuel filter housing. When it quits, unscrew the fuel filter and see if it's empty. If yes, then you have to troubleshoot backwards to the tank. The round fittings with hex bolts through them are called banjo fittings. Some of them have filter screens that clog up. Remove/inspect/clean/replace as necessary.

The sediment bowl has a screen at the top of the glass. Turn off the fuel valve, remove the glass bowl, see if the screen is clogged.

There's also a screen inside the tank, over the pipe that feeds the sediment bowl. But to check it, you first have to drain the tank - and then remove the entire sediment bowl assembly from the tank.

While the assembly is removed, look at the shut off valve. Some have found drilled off center, giving one the false impression that the fuel flow valve is fully opened.

If all that checks out ok, you probably have a bad lift pump. Unfortunately, it's part of the injection pump assembly - and cannot be replaced at the component level. You'd need an entirely new injection pump assembly.

The pour point blend of diesel fuel varies by state and winter months. In Alaska where I live it's -25 C in October and moves down to -49 C in December. I have started and used my tractor down to -25 F, but I avoid that every chance I get. I use Power Service summer and winter - works for me. The chart in this link is a little dated but it should be pretty close.

I am wondering if anyone would have any info on where I could find parts and or part numbers for a creeper gear attachment that goes on the left side of the trans. These were an option and came in two versions. Old [manual] and new [variable]. I have the older manual type. thanks.Jim

I'll bet you don't like those freezing mornings in Florida. I'm guessing when you put the battery back in you did something wrong to not have it back to where it was. All terminals should be clean and tight, red to + and black to -, make sure you put all the wires back on, sometimes one falls down behind something and you miss it. When you get it back to where it was, start with the neutral switch on the transaxle. Unplug it and put a jumper wire in the plug in the harness and try to start it. Also make sure the blk/wht wire coming out of the 6 prong engine harness is grounded. There is also a start relay on the frame rail next to the regulator. Feel it and see if it is working when you turn the key to the start position. There is a red wire that plugs into a spade connection on the starter. Pull it off. stick a test light probe in it and see if it gets hot when you turn the key to start. Let me know what you find on each and we can go from there.

Thank you. The knob you speak of is turned to the open position. The mower deck would not lower with the rockshaft lever but I was able to get it off anyway without much effort. It's the lowerering/raising lever that absolutely won't move. The stop is all the way down and the mower adjust lever on the operator's left (by the pto selector) is adjusted with slack in the cable. Something is stuck somewhere but I just don't see it. My unfamiliarity with this tractor is definitely working against me. Thanks for your information. David

Ha Ha, it's not just a senior thing. If it weren't for the camera in my cell phone, I couldn't tell you where our digital camera is either. Now if only my phone battery had any juice left I could take a picture of the bolts working loose. Better plug it in eh?
