My MF 235 runs perfect in high speed range, all gears and PTO, but will not engage in low range. I've opened tranny and cannot find any damage, but think maybe issue is in planetary unit. Anybody with ideas???
Thanks

I'm not familliar with how the Masseys are put together, but if the shift from lo to hi ranges is controled by a lever of some sort it might be that a pin or key has been sheared somewhere in the linkage. Or if it is a power shift from lo to hi with hydraulics controling a clutch there may be a clog or a kink in a line to the clutch. Just throwing out ideas. Sometimes it can be simple and we kick ourselves for not seeing it the first time in. Hope it's warm where you are working on it. Frank. ....

The way it is worded not sure: does the pto also not work with tractor in low range?
If my memory is correct the standard transmission is total mechanic linkage with no hyd controls. Not sure they did on that tractor but had some they offered an addition shifter with lever for it on the dash. Not sure how it worked but don't think it affected the pto.
It would be my guess that Hardwood is correct something about the linkage is worn or broken. Again if memory is correct you will find you can pull the shift levers up some. I have had the lever to come clear of the shifter slots in the transmission preventing shifting. Had to remove the top of the transmission with the gear levers in it (this is a small plate) and get the linkage back in line. Believe it or not it was very easy for me to figure it out at a very young age by just looking at the shifter slots and the levers. Saying think you will be able to also. ....

Thanks so much for your response. Good news is yes...tractor is in shop and so at least warm. I have tranny opened and cannot find any shears, but fortunately I've got somebody with much more experience coming to look over with me this week-end. I will share ideas supplied by you and kthompson.
Godspeed,
CDeitz ....

kthompson,
Thanks so much for the ideas. I will share with buddies coming to offer support this week-end. It helps to have a better idea of specifically what we are looking for.
Godspeed,

I think the shifter slots when both are in neutral with be in line with each other, forming a rectangle.
Do be careful in checking this as it is easy to want to stand beside the tractor and it running to see if it is shifting properly with the top plate off...don't. ....
