I hope the decomposing refers to the machine, not the owner. Yes, could be cracked block or warped head, but it's typical for a tractor to need a new head gasket once in its lifetime.

Why don't you get a service manual and new gasket, remove the hood, and get a good torque wrench. Lots of steps but each is simple. Store removed parts in order so you have each at hand when reassembling. If the engine is shot, it will not have cost you all that much to give the most likely problem a try.

If that fixes it, run 5-10 hrs with rad cleaner, Drain and repeat until coolant is clear.

If you shred it, you will be defeating your original purpose. IMHO it will be like spreading cow dung (minus running it through the dung maker) which will suffocate any growth. If anything I would compost it. Heap it and let it decompose on its own, then ammend the soil with it.

Another thought: straw doesn't have much seed---hay however does. Do you really want hay for a lawn?

Yes its hard to say. Both models are pretty much identical, but the differences are: The 60" has 2000 fpm more blade speed (I'd use high suction blades on the 54 to offset this), the 60" has 1/2" more blade overlap, the 60" is 8 gauge as opposed to 10 gauge, but the 60" weighs more. My yard is 2.5 acres with id say 1/3 of it being hill, is flat, just has a good slop if you get what I mean (no funny twists or bumps). The PTO can lift this and more, and I'd offset the weight with some suitcase weights on the front. As for speed I normally cut in 5th, and use 4th if the grass is heavy or wet, but would probably just use 4th all the time with the 60".

As for everything else costs and maintenance seem to be the same (same mower just ones a little thicker gauge deck and bigger). I just don't want to overwork my 7100 and have it get pushed around by something that's too heavy (why i'm not going with the PRD lines). But at the same time I dont want to go with something too small because I know the second run of the 7100's you could get a 60" mid mount mower. So its a tossup and cant decide.

Maybe not........ I have an Feb 2006 sales brochure in front of me that suggests that 4wd was an option on the 4210 through 4710 models.

could somebody possibly email me the manual for the kubota l245dt 4wd tractor. my neighbour has just purchased an old one, but the 4wd shaft is missing,,,,, thats the shaft that has a spline on either end that fits over the stubbie axles of the front and back axles then the splined sleeves slip over to keep the shaft in place.<br>
As i work in engineering i may be able to make a new shaft, but i think the splines would be difficult to replicate so looks like i may need a new shaft, or modify one to suit with a square drive rather than the splines.<br>

How much tilling could you hire someone to do for the cost of a creeper gear? How about a creeper gear plus the tiller plus the fuel and wear?

Or, if the creeper is a dealer add-on, order it without, and if you find you need it, get it put on. If it's a factory, not a dealer-install, option, ask the dealer to let you try the tiller on his lot with an equivalent tractor, and you decide if 1 mph or whatever is slow enough. The creeper would slow that to around one-third.

If the lowest speed was closer to 0.5 mph, I'd say forget a creeper. As it is, I doubt that you'll ever use it, but can't guarantee that, and it's always better to have a feature and not use it than to need it and not have it. And tractors last a long time, so get what you want.

The odd time I need to till I get a Honda from the local rent-all.

On the newer L series tractors there is a sight glass on the rear of the differential to indicate fluid level, and then there is a red plastic screw cap ~3" in diameter on the very top of the back side of the diff. right between the two rocker arms. <br>

It is my understanding all L series were built this way to allow for a cab.<br>

If there was something on the top of the transmission itself it would be inside the cab if so equipped.<br>

It's difficult to compare 3ph lift specs. They often are not measured using the same method. Maybe they are measured at the pins, or two feet behind the pins, or.... Seems to me unlikely that two tractors of the same class had that large a difference in real world capabilities. The only thing that matters is that they will lift what you need lifted.

If it were me I'd buy the JD simply because the local JD dealer is much better than the NH dealer.

If the dealer quality was reversed I'd lean toward the NH.

Having a good dealer with good support and fast parts and service availability is worth a lot.

Art, I find it fun to watch the seats on tractors. When I see a cheap replacement seat on one, ok they skimped there so where else did they? Realize that is not 100% accurate but if a person does not care about comfort...either they have hired help on that machine they also don't care about or else that was only seat they could find at the time (only type one local shop stocks). It does amaze me a person will put a machine for thousands on dollars for sale and the seat is such no one is able to sit on it and test it comfortable.

It gets it hard to reach top speed and when you take it out of gear it stops up prompt with no free wheel. It did go low in oil, we located leak and stopped it and topped it up with universal oil(as indicated by our local tractor mechanic) but problem still presists.<br>

There is no problem putting it into any of the gears. Anyone any idea what the problem may be??

Ok, now I'm getting the picture, it's still a little fuzzy in that I can't figure out what could be 'spinning' that would change the direction of the controls.

I do know the parts you are speaking about as far as the push rods that actuate the valves when you move the levers, they have a tiny flex joint much like an automotive ball joint to allow a fluid motion in a wide variety of directions.

I suspect the 4 way levers are fixed by a (or a pair of) nuts around a threaded sleeve. It appears one has come loose. Have a look at where the lever mounts to the B/H and see (maybe under the rubber dust boot?) if a lock nut has come loose.

I have a B7100 that has the oil light coming on, from what I've read on here, its most likely some sort of rubber plug in the end of the camshaft that has fell out... what I would like to know, is how to find out if thats the case, where do I look, and how do I fix it? Any and all help would be GREATLY appreciated! <br>

I have a 1600. I bought it from Wayne at Little Miami Trading (www.lmtcompany.com) near Cincinnati. He has blades in stock and he told me that the bearings are all standard sizes and I was pretty much on my own for anything else. I only use it to prepare the garden each spring with my 31 HP Kubota. It should last me forever.
