In my opinion with you being gone as you are you need a very good relationship with a very good dealership that is LOCAL. You may find you need them to handle your maintance possibly by emails or phone request. The only way to know you have the right one is time with time. It may be email or phone or in person. A good one will ask what you want the tractor and or equipment for and will help explain what you need size wise and type of equipment. You also may find if you will be home and doing your work in short burst renting a good option, especially on any equipement you may only need for a certain job. <br>

Thanks for the responses. I just had to correctly adjust the top link. The BX23 handled the tiller easily, worked perfectly. The RTM 60 tiller weighs 340lbs and only requires 15hp(or more)at the PTO. Thanks again, Ken

I'd be real surprised if it had left hand threads, blade direction alone would dictate right hand threads. I've had quite a few Deere mower decks, but never a 261, all the decks I've had were right hand thread. If you have never changed the blades you may find the bolts to be very tight, the factor of the blades pulling against the threads in a tightening direction plus rust will sometimes have them stuck pretty good. Oil the threads when you replace the bolts, that will help with next time's blade change. Frank.

The car will start sometimes but not the next. However, my mother will wait a little bit and then it will start. My mother had a small accident about three months ago. The damage was only in the front bumper area. The local GM dealer thought the problem could have something to do with that but I don't agree.

I'm very sorry to hear the bad news concerning your neighbor's husband. How sad.

In many such cases, a tractor likely sits for many years while the man was just too ill to operate or maintain it. It's very unfortunate for the widow, but this is a very common scenario.

I truly wish I didn't have to be the one to pass along the bad news, but the reality of the situation is that the tractor has been neglected to the point that it is now worth almost nothing on the used market. She'd be much better off selling it at auction.

I'd check the shaft for run-out--a bent shaft would cause premature seal failure. Also, verify that the gearbox vent is free to atmosphere--a clogged vent would prevent trapped air to expand and possibly pop the seal lip enough to allow the drip-through you speak of.

Many sub-compacts have tiny little front tires with very limited weight bearing capacity.

It is a fact that some manufacturers keep the hydraulic pressure(and therefore the lift capacity) set low so as not to overload the front tires and sometimes to keep from overloading the front axle.

Tread cautiously if you decide to change the relief pressure on your hydraulic system.

congrats on the new kioti- they are very versatile units that as other posts indicate require some basic add-ons- the first and most critical is counter weights- it will greatly increase the stability and lift capability. I do not encourage you to overload the front end by lifting boulders or attempting to move a stump, but counter-weighting will make a big difference in steering.

As for being able to weld- you no doubt have enough savvy to make brackets or quick disconnects plates to fit your machine. A lot of the quick disconnect implements available out there are very easily made universal if not already.

Auctions and tractor wrecking yards are a gold mine for people like you and myself- you will get ALL kinds of ideas and talk with some of the people mulling around these places- you will come up with something that works.

I am a welder / fabricator by trade and am working on a bucket alteration for my Leyland FEL for "grabbing" brush. Let me know if you are interested

Ya, they're handy for light work, and there are at least two 18V models out now.

Batteries don't last forever, which is why I wouldn't buy another that you have to dismantle with special tools to expose the battery -- which costs as much to replace as to buy a whole new unit.

You're not alone here.

My local New Holland dealer just received a new compact tractor with a cab and loader. He wasn't open at the time I went by, so I went home to look up the specs on that tractor via the internet.

The New Holland website doesn't even list that model number. I searched high and low, and never did find the thing listed anywhere.

New Holland has a long way to go regarding their website, model number listings, parts, etc.

Glad to hear you got the thing going.

The frost plug in the engine was probably removed when a block heater was installed. You could easily install a block heater in the same hole, should you wish to do so.

You should go to tractorhouse.com and search through the "less than 40 horsepower" listings. That will give you some idea what the dealers around the country are asking for a tractor like yours.

Once you establish a good starting price, you can then place an advertisement at tractorhouse.com. I have no idea what the fee is for placing an ad there, but that site is generally considered THE PLACE to go when looking for compact tractors.

Ebay is not recommended, due to the high number of scams that take place there. Your bidders will be contacted by bogus sellers, hoping to gather active e-mail addresses, or even by posing as the seller of your tractor. In many cases, Ebay tractor buyers have sent their money to people in foreign nations, rather than to the actual seller.

I'm sorry to hear that you have to sell the thing. Hope all works out well for you.

Glad to hear you got the thing running properly.

If you take care not to leave your tractor out in the elements for extended periods of time, I doubt that you'll ever have problems like that again.

However, I would follow the advice given earlier. Somehow water got into your gear box, causing the rust problem. I'd definitely drain and replace the transmission oil. It's the cheapest form of insurance you'll ever buy.

I am trading my 254a for a 404, because I am moving up from a 50 parcel, which I mowed last year with a 5' bush hog to a 9' bar mower to accomodate a 20 acre increase in the contract. 5' a round on 70 acres is discouraging. So the 404 will better serve me. I have been using the 254 with the 9' mower, but it is too much (although a testimony to the the ruggedness of this tractor). I have no qualms with staying with the Foton brand since the 254 has been a good investment. It has been a crescent wrench/screwdriver tractor, but I have an excellent service dealer. If you have seen Mayer Farm Implement posting on the web, pay heed. These guys a good.

I have been told parts availability for the Foton is much better than Nortrac, Farm Pro, Jimna.

Yup Kenny is right this time. Now mine won't start using a key when the solenoid does kick in (solenoid is new). It sound like the starter is just sucking the juice out of the battery which is new.

What I resort to now is turning the ignition switch to ON or RUN, lift the hood, pull the left side panel away a few inches and with two coins touching each other, nail or whatever metal tool is lieing around jump the solenoid from the battery cable to the small solenoid wire---starts right up (aslong as it's not cold enough to need the glowplugs).
