We have a 4 x 2 Gator that is like 7 years old. It has been good on repairs not needing anything other than maintenance with probably like 300 hours.

The green was my wife's idea totally and against my desire but since it is her's...
The model we have no suspension on rear axle, very limited braking ability with no seat belts. On paved road probably can handle some more speed but on rough ground with ours it is fast enough. I know JD has made some improvements but look at your machine very carefully before you push the speed.

Now why I do like the speed of the JD, it falls into Farm Machine category with insurance and tags and such. The faster machines do not here.

Having a RFM on small tractor and zero turn with mid mower deck totally agree with Auerbach recommendation of a front mounted mower deck. Heep rather have than deck under me keeping me as far away from limbs as possible. You may not need a zero turn depending on your cut pattern. I have no problem running right by tress with my RFM and if the tractor has hydrostat transmission very easy to slow just as your mower gets to it. You may be very well served by a rear discharge RFM keeping both sides of the deck where you can cut close to the trees. I would think keeping clear of lower limbs would limit the body size of the machine and would think mower would have smaller body and tires than even a compact tractor.

osut, Forgive me for not welcoming you to TP first. Sorry about the back. Assuming you healed well.

There are others who have the experience on the FEL here much better to address that issue but I don't know anyone who runs a tractor without some weight on the lift or wheel weights unless they are lifting such as wood mulch.

As to the jerky fel operation, with the amount of hours on tractor you would have gone through at least one hyd oil and filter change. Is it possible someone used and got pieces of telfon tape on hyd tubing connections with pieces getting into the hyd system?

The sad thing with the A/C it probably is a very simple issue that has just been missed. Can a by pass wire(s) not be run even expouse to least test that?

As to fuel gage, at times mine can move a lot. Do think it is due to dual tanks.

Don't know your tractor but if like most try lubing where it goes into the transmission with oil. Why do they get hard to shift, one reason is such as chemicals that cause rust. Fertilizer spreader is a great to do this as so is some chemicals. I would suggest you should lube all such linkage where they enter transmission.

I don't know the 250 right off. But found a site that is suppose to have a free download of layout on that tractor.

I would doubt the PTO lever would connect to a filter housing. Does that tractor also have remote hyd? If so on some MF you can not run both 3 pth and a remote lift at same time. You have to normally pull the 3 pth fully up for the remote to work and if one of remote levers is in not the central position don't know if the 3 pth will work. My brother has a 273 or so model and think the hyd filter on it is a spin on type. About same year as your's.

Have you checked your oil to be sure it is still clean and does not have water getting in it still?

Remember a new mower can have a bent pulley or bad belt or bearing or something loose. Have you checked to be sure all turn freely and you are greasing all properly. I found out a air powered grease gun (my does any way) will sound like it is pumping grease when it is not. Learned to use manual for bearings.

You asked for suggestions between those tractors, I will passed on that also.

It would be a help to tell how close to the house you will be digging. How wide you want to dig or need to dig. Also when you say a "few" meters how many do you mean, a number range would be better.

If you wanting to dig only, excavator sure beats any TLB. Depending on depth and width needed a trencher is also great. If you are far enough from the house for the outriggers the TLB does offer the front end loader benefit. I would check the specs and back off the max digging depth by a foot at least. Also since you are looking at used machines pay some attention to the bucket. Just because it has a certain width bucket does not mean it will handle that width in your dirt and it also might not be a digging bucket but probably will be.

Renting a machine is low cost compared to buying and hiring is lower cost compared to damaging house. If you are looking to price for rental don't take a daily rate and figure that would be price for say 7 days as weekly is less and monthly is less than 4 weekly rates would be. At risk of being rude and don't mean to if you are installing draining ditch here be sure you know the proper materials and steps. I know, it is no fun to install drain tile to have to come back later to do it right.

You mentioned cruising speed, so it is when being driven I assume. If you have four wheel drive are you running it in 4 wheel drive on such as paved road? If so the drive train is binding up loading it up.

Assuming you have good air capacity normally I find if you can get load off of them and turn the flatten place up, you can normally pull the tire in place enough for it to pop back. You need to pull it over where the valve is on the rim. If you have a chuck that will lock in place that would be a plus.

I have used the Slime material with ok results.

For me your question is the answer. The line about your local nortrac dealer, how do you find them? Or where are they? I did a search for Nortract tractors and it did not bring up any web site for them or way to locate dealers or support. The only soucre I saw for them is Northern Tool. OK they are good company (NT) but the nearest to me is 120 or so miles and I know they don't have any service center there.

Within the 120 mile distance is probably 3 or more Kioti dealerships, at least half dozen of JD, NH, Kubota or MF. Those all have mechanics and parts departments.

Now I have never sat on a Nortrac machine, heard one run. They may be worth every bit of what they cost if the support is there.

Have you searched for a dealer? About 12 or 16 years back there were I think two in South Carolina. No idea now. Murf here probably is the best on your brand.

Is that a mirror on right side of your dash? does it work well there? Do you have a canopy on your tractor if so did you think about mounting a mirror there? I need to install as I do road mine some.

Rtyler, if bearings are the only needed parts, you may find they are available at auto parts store. The race of the bearing should have a number on the side they can use for reference.

Just how many of those small pines are you needing to take out? If you use a rough cut mower there will be nice sharp stuble left and not what you want for running track. If there are not a lot of them how about a good weed eater with blade on it? As to how major a flail mower you need for up to two inch pine, I have cut a fair amount using one with good cast cutters and no issues. If it were two inch oak, different issue. Back to have done it but don't recommened it have cut up to about four inch pines with heavy duty rough cut mower. Slow and steady. If you don't mind driving over it with your tractor, my guess is a rough cut mower will handle it.

If you have a lot to cut consider hiring someone who has such as a skid steer with the front mount mulching cutter on it.

I agree with each of you. Just wonder have I given follow up on each question I have asked.

I think one reason is many forget where they came to. Mine is not set up to receive update emails but wonder if that would help if you had to set up that way? Another issue I think is how long it is between some asking and their question getting any attention. It seems there are some questions that are asked right often, wonder if there should be a FAQ section?

I think the slasher is what most here call a rough cut mower.

As to the engine overheating: clogged air filter will cause it to run hot. A suggestion is to get a infared remote thermomentor and check the temp of the radiator core in different places to see if there are cool areas showing coolant is not running through those veins. It is my understanding the thermostat being totally out will cause an engine to run hotter (You will find those who argue this both ways.)as the coolant does not have time to transfer temp as it desgined to. Is it possible you are running the engine at too low a RPM with such a load as the slasher or too high ground speed. You may need to drop to a lower gear.

One very simple item COULD be the belt on the alternator needs tightening as it is slipping.
