Mowing down the hill, if it's steep, 4wd is mandatory. I regularly mow a road bank up and down it is steep enough that if I got sideways it would probably roll over in a couple of places.

I'd rather mow up hill and weight the front end if necessary.

30 hp sounds small to me for what you are going to need and want to do.

If you want to stay on the small side I'd look at 1 small 30-35 hp and a older larger grunt tractor $5-6,000. The larger one can handle spreader duties, the heavy field mowing, hauling hay etc.

It sounds like a good idea. I am not sure if I would want calcium or salt on the floor in my shed because of corossion issues.

I think I would lean toward a very light oil mixture (oil and kero blend) spray on with a garden sprayer very light and retreat areas that get scuffed. Or try a Janitor supply house and get the stuff they use on tile before pushing a big dust mop up and down the floor.

You might even be able to dilute a asphalt emlusion blend enought to geta very light coating.

Chip11 yes you can shift the transmission side while on the move. YOU "SHOULD NOT" SHIFT THE RANGE on the move.

If I am in the "C" HI range (JD cut) it makes NO SENSE to start in 4th gear and slip the clutch till you get it moving. I use the hand throttle and reduce the rpm when shifting up. Most people use the foot throttle.

If the transmission is not syncro type you will have to get your rpms right.

I regularly work in the "B" MID range and shift between 4th and 2nd when doing loader work.

I very rarely shift the ranges on the move but it can be done using good rpm control between ranges.

The older style Transmissions with both shifters mounted between the knees seemed more easier to feel the gears mesh, thus making shifts feel smoother.

C my picture #2 I do not abuse little tractor like that every day but you would never move that load in hi gear from a dead stop.

I use a radio with GOOD stero earmuffs. The hiquality earmuffs block out a lot of the offensive noise. Mostly when I'm mowing 3-4 hours of quiet time, soft music and time to contemplate the great things in life.

I also find myself using it lots with the BH.

I do need to upgrade the cheap am/fm that comes in the ready built tractor boxes.

Wildman I use a york rake to do that. Here's the cool part. If you had thought about over seeding now is the time to do it.

It really makes a huge difference.

The rear mowers can be off set but it does not help much unless you have lots of clearance from limbs. I usually try to turn away from the tree at the last sec so the mower swings under the tree with out hitting it.

I usually use my lawn tractor to trim or the string trimmer. I also have a old scikle bar mower for trimming under my pines and along the road banks and ditches a couple of times a year.

If you have lots of trees ie: a christmas tree farm or orchard you might want to consider a orchard mower that is build with a 3' or so offset

I use mine (I think it is a 1572 with out looking) the land scape rake is really for doing finish work, removing larger stones etc. The rocks you have to hand pick. I would compare its use with a hard garden rake not a leaf rake.

I do use mine for raking up brush and probably lots of other stuff. I hate getting off to clean the debrie out of the teeth.

The problem with using it for driveways is its tendancy to want to seperate the stone from the fines. You end up with all the course rock on top and the fines on the bottom.

The really best way to use it is with guadge wheels. Alought I've used mine more than 12 years with out them and have did ok.

I would not consider a flip down scraper blade for it. I would buy a scraper blade as first choice. The scraper blade is more versitle. The york is more specialized.

Chip11 Welcome Me thinks if you have some good fabrication skills you could do it. Go look see how JD does it, take a couple of pictures and have at it.

JD may also have a ready built retro fit for that style.

I can not say wether the fabrication would be as solid as it needs to be. But I would think if you boxed each side of the cuts and welded hinges on the box material you should have some reasonable amount of protection.

I use a 72" landpride rear mount it does a beautiful job. It has high lift blades so it tends to pick up the grass.

Tie your discharge chute open. Remow and let the clippings spread out even. It will do the job until you are ready to build and keep a manicured lawn.

That is a very interesting question. JD says it will not fit. I've wondered why they haven't made the brackets.

Their first concern is probably wheel width.

2nd probably is why build brackets if the wheels are wider than the blower.

I would suspect you could build or have built the custom brackets.

Now as a side note I do 2 drives for neighbors with a 3ph blower and both are all of 10-15% grades with no problems. 1 of them is over a half mile long.

You'll need to put a good cover over the discharge chute. But most any blade will do it as long as it is sharp.

Another thought: Stop by your local dog groomer and get a bag of dog hair mix it in with the mulch. It is suspose to work. But I can not say for certain.
