Dennis have you looked at the possibility of an instant message area, for members, who's on line? Many times I see several members posting at the same time looking for ideas or just have something to say. Lots of the messages seem like just shooting the breeze.

I can think of a couple of times I've needed info especially on hyd's and could have picked TomG's brain a lot better this way.

I'm not real big on chat rooms but do use Windows Messenger with family. It seems to be a simple way to say Hi and is not to complicated.

The forum would have to be something you do so the format is genaric.

Dennis I carry a laptop with me. I'm usually in a truck all day during the season. Many times I've considered taking the plunge into hooking to landline but the slowness of file transfers stops me, especially the toll charges for 30 minutes or so on line.<br>

I have state of art digital phone and that ain't worth diddley squat in the boonies. Of course that is usually where I get get some free time cause no one else can communicate either. Oh yeah I have the cable for that to use on the laptop but do not use because of so many reception problems (and distractions) while moving, plus it would be slower than pond water.<br>

So I only use voice communications. I also use a lot of GPS software. I've looked into pda's for simplified GPS and notes so maybe I'll relook the phone and PDA issue.<br>

PS I'm home every night, usually, except when I'm skiing or at Atlantic City then who cares about communications...

Bushman Asphalt would make an excellent floor. I was gonnaa use it in the Wood shed I just built. Kids filled my other semi-formal shed (concrete floor) with their stuff. As of now the shed has crusher run and next year I'll put in either asphalt or millings. I get a very special deal on construction stuff. The problem with asphalt is you would have a very difficult time getting the size machinery in the barn to keep it at grade and get the compaction needed. Asphalt is very time sensitive. It comes from the plants, depending on type and specs, at about 295-320 degrees F. It is a lot of work.

I have seen lots of asphalt in pavalions that are open around the sides allowing equipment to work freely.

Concrete is easier to work with its not as time sensitive and it has a tighter, less porrous, surface.

Finding a rebuilt clutch and or complete kit is gonna be hard for a compact. Try Wengers in PA. Most of the tractor parts yards only deal in older tractors.

The clutch is goona be cheap compared to flywheel and pressure plate. You might be able to resurface flywheel.

I just looked it up at JD parts. That has live pto? the complete kit with both clutches and all plates is $1500. Looks like quite a project. I do not have that service manual so can not say how big of a job.

Quincy the dealer should have delivered no charge! I have NEVER heard of a dealer charging to deliver a $15,000+ piece of brand new equipment. 50 miles is not excessive.

Cecil1 the problem you will encounter is how quick your local dealer will take care of your warranty issues, if you have any.

If you have mechanical skills and buy the shop and part manuals you will have no problem with most repairs.

My 4400 whent back to JD 3X for updates and to install 48 BH I was never charged once for that service.

Chief I gotta agree with Ken. Skil used to be one of the finest names you could buy. Along with Black & Decker, and many others that were bought by conglomerates for the name reginition. Then built the stuff so cheap making a hugh profif and dumping the name.

My prerfernce for circular saws is Makita, I have other tools by dewalt, craftsman, milawakie, air nailers by Portercable, bostich...

For finish type cutting you can not beat a good table saw or radial arm and a high quality router.

Sorry but I do not shop at wal mart for any kind of tool.

Morning Scott I don't think it's an issue of getting around things rather than between them. If you do not have narrow clearance issues I would go to the 60".

The 60" will get you closer to stuff so you should have less trimming. You get a nicer overlap with the wider deck which will give you a little more space betwee wheel tracks.

If you mow your fence lines you should be able to do a reall nice job.

Just guessing here: Have you went thru "ALL" of your operator present switches? There are a couple under the seat. The seat belt switches? There is a module way down under the seat that usually bothers the ones we have at work.

The safety features are a real night mare on the new skid steers but manufactures have to install them to protect Darwin awards type people from doing stupid stuff.

Chief I have a 4400 with turfs on the stamped wheels when I reversed mine it seems like 2" each side. I'd have to look it up for sure.

2" does not not sound like much until you operate across a slope. Its a world of difference.

I do not fiddle with tire pressures it is set For a no load operation (except the weights) and left alone. The hoe squats the tires fairly well but it's not on there all day every day.

Frank you allready have a 555? If so do you need the smaller BH unit? If not you could get more tractor for your money to mow with. 5 acres is a lot and I would wanna be up at a 72" mower and 30+ HP range.

That said: If the sheet metal is clean & straight showing another degree of care, and the rest is as you say, and you have some mechanical abilities I would not be afraid to buy a used tractor with those hours.

Pins and bushing are not hard to replace. GREEN bushings get real pricey. I would (if they need it) pull things apart during the winter and get pins and bushing from a genaric source.

A little smoke at start up is not a bad thing. It should be a nice light blue and stop after a couple of minutes.

As I've said in other posts my first BABY tractor was a 5year old ford 1500. I paid $5000 used it for 13 years and traded it for $7000. So you may be getting something that will be a good thing.

But as others have said: Check it over closely.

John The shop manuals are the first thing I get as I sign the contracts.

The shop manuals along with the detailed parts book showed me all I needed, (plus I picked a couple of mechanics brains) to change the valving around on the 48 hoe to suit me. (See dipper cylinder).

I still do all the brake work and the cars are new enough not to need major repair. Only my old Farmall requires lots of heavy repair and I work at that a little at a time during the winter.

I do most of the maintenence of our live bottm & dump fleet at work during the off season. The main shop does all of the drive line and brake work.

Greasy finger nails are a good thing...

I always "Dicker" when ever I can! And I usually haggle over price ;-).

Dealers have some flexibility. There is a thread about this somewhere. If it did not end up in the middle another thread.

Art was saying it may depend on the area. I had told of 2 different prices from the same dealership different locations.

My 4400 with 430 came out the door at $23,000 if I remember right BUT I haggled for 6 months. Actually it was $16000 with my trade. Got $7000 trade for a Ford 1500 I paid $5000 for 2nd hand and used 13 years.

With that example they do have some room to haggle.

Rex are the wheels set at the widest setting? Valve stems facing the inside? If not change tire and wheels side to side that will give you 6-8 more inches of width.

F350 you brought a smile to my face this AM.

As I was getting ready to retire we moved the family back here. My oldest was 16 or so and had went to the FFA sponsored tractor operator safety course which is required for employment on a farm.

He'd never seen the south end of a north bound cow.

He came home just in awe about the crap shooter up there. I almost hit the ceiling until I realized as he continued his adventure story he was talking about a manure spreader...

WHAT EVER YOU DO DO NOT HIT THAT EMPTY TANK WITH A TOURCH!!! Your neighbors will not have any windows left and Homeland security will visit you IF they can find you.

Digging it up and then hauling it away in the middle of the night is as good as it can get. Couple cases of beer and some "Good-ole-boys" but most of them don't keep secrets very well...

Craig I have a 48 on a 4400 and everything is evenly spaced. Those steps are useless. I drop a stabilizer part way down and step up on that.

I can not see anyway they could screw up the mount.

Is one of your tires/wheels reversed?

They should both have the valve stems on the inside if turf or r4. Not sure how r1 gain width and would have to look up.

Your tires should be at the widest setting for the hoe.

Art thanks for correcting. I did word the HP part poorly. You can have a larger generator than needed with only enough HP for your application...

Tom you are correct about the importance of the grid disconnect. The power people installed the Big lever disconnect to disconnect the complete service from the grid. But for what ever reason the shunts did not pull out. I'd have to go back and ask what happened and it was years ago...

Diesel does not pour thru a coffee filter unless you have something way different than I've tried.

Depending on how much fuel you have stored and if you have a way to use it. It is had to recommend what to do with it.

I'd treat and use it, unless you have lots stored, and keep changing filters as needed.

If you have lots stored check with your distributor for help disposing of fuel. Filters would then cost more than the hassle.

If your main purpose is for field type work you can not go wrong with the R1s.

My old compact had r1s on it and I mowed the lawn with it and saw no damage to yard.

R1s will give you some bite when the grass and/or soil is damp.
