I guess my first question is why you want a wood floor in a shop. Years ago the only building I had for a shop had a wood floor. This building had been used for years ahead of me to overhaul tractors and general repair work. over the years enough oil had been spilled on the floor that it used to catch fire once in a while when I would be welding and I would'nt know it till I lifted the helmet. If your concern is to have an open space between the ground and the floor I think piers of concreet made with cardboard pier forms and prestresed concreet decking would be in much better shape 25 yrs. down the road than any type of wood floor. When I finally got a shop with a concreet floor I thought I'd died and gone to Heaven. Perhaps you have some underlying reasons for wanting a wood floor and those are none of my business, you need not share them if you choose not to. Just my thoughts, Frank.

ArnoldB; I've used my 1584 quite a bit since my first post on this thread. Unless the soil is loosened up by another inpliment first the 1584 just doesn't weigh enough to penetrate undisturbed soil with or without the blade atachment. I've been using mine to move soil around that was torn up by a chisel plow to fill in some low spots. I don't have the blade attachment, but it will grab enough soil in the first few feet of travel to make the 4410 snort a bit and pull it to where you want it. I have an LP box scraper that will loosen up the soil and pull it to where you want it in one operation. So which is best? The box scraper is heavy enough that even with the teeth fully withdrawn it would tear up grass more than you want, but would probably jerk the half burried rocks out, but on the other side of the coin it can't be angled to swath soil or crushed rock and I doubt that the box scraper would work very good to gather trash, etc. it just wasn't designed for that purpose. I really did'nt answer your question directly, but just tried to point out some of the things I've learned since I've got both machines. Enjoy your weekend, Frank.

Jeff; There are three basic types of tractor mounted backhoes. First is the fullsize dedicated machine we've all wished we could have. I shoped for one before I got the #48 Deere hoe, seemed that 25,000. was about the least you could spend to get something that was'nt worn out. I have two neighbors with 3pt. mount hoes. They chimed right in with what HuckMeat said, real hard on 3pt. hitches, some also needed a separate PTO driven pump, were'nt real stable while in use, etc., both said find something better. I had a # 4300 Deere tractor at the time so I liked the subframe idea and bought one. I've since traded the 4300 for a 4310 and put the hoe on it. It's been a real nice solid unit, Just this winter I put a Deere 4 in one bucket on the 430 loader. The #48's do come off quite easily, but we've just turned the 4310 into a dedicated unit and bought a 4410 to do the mowing, etc. My son and I used the hoe all day yesterday cleaning up rocks and fencerow brush and old stumps. The 4 in one bucket is really a neat deal. We would dig out some brush or stumps, use the clam bucket to gather and pick up the brush or stumps. Seems like every time the hoe was off we needed it for something, so I guess my justification was that a new 4410 cost lots less than a worn out fullsize hoe, granted it has less capibilitys, but serves 98% of our needs. This is only my opinion formed from experience not any scientific studys. I'm really not a big believer in synthetics unless the owners manual calls for it. I'd stick with what he factory recomdations are unless they change their specs. for some reason. We do use synthetics in certian gearbox aplications where it's called for, at eight bucks a quart (JD) it has to be doing something that mineral oils can't. In my case it involves a high temprature extreme preshure situation in a 3,000. dollar gearbox. I realize that tractor engines have a harder life than an automobile or pickup, but with timely mantinence with the recommended lubracants the tin worm eats up the body before the engine wears out on most cars. Matt, Most of your questions would be answered by the owners manual, so make sure the dealer gets you the right one for your tractor. I have green tractors not orange so I'll only answer in general terms. Break in periods don't seem to be as critical as in the past, but I think it's still a good idea to break in properly. Deere uses a break in oil that isn't to be changed till a specific number of hours are on the unit so before adding any oil be sure if they call for a break in oil. As for daily maintinence, allways check the oil. air filter restrictor, trans fluid level, and just a general walk around checking for leaks, trash on the radiator screen, etc. Again I'm not familiar with how Kubota adjusts the swing of their three point hitch, but it can be adjusted with the sway control to keep the box blade from moving that far side to side. Likely your banging noise when pushing to the rear with the box blade is the three point hitch hitting the swing stops. If youre going to push soil to the rear with the box blade I'd adjust the three pt. to a non swinging serting, banging from side to side can be real hard on things. My Land Pride box blade has a push blade on the backside, but I seldom use it, I find getting the soil to the general areia with the box blade then using the FEL to level it out, then depending on how level you want it the landscape rake does a beautiful job of finishing up. Remember I'm omly speaking in general terms here, so get the owners manual

We bought a farm in 1969, neighbors told me that a former owner had a milk can buryed with money in it somewhere in the farmyard. There's hardly a square foot of that yard we have'nt dug up to install a water line, electric conduit, sewer system, building footings, etc., so far my ship hasn't come in. We have found old cisterns, a well with a wood casing, but so far no cash. Frank.

Chip11, welcome aboard. My only thought is a possible problem at trade in time, similar to trading in a lawn mower with the grass chute missing. Just for that reason I would fabricate an entire new folding unit, and keep the original around for trade in time. Might not hurt to talk to your insurance carrier too. The Deere salesperson told me recently that there are now about a million release forms to sign if you buy one of their new 4 wheelers, and after just recently changing insurance carriers they too are getting real picky about covering certian things. I researched several different companys before changing carriers. None of them would sell me coverage with a trampoline on the property period, all would cover me if a pool or pond were fenced and supervised, but at a higher rate, some would'nt cover me if I owned certian breeds of dogs, and four wheelers were iffy, Gators were fine. Sorry I wandered on to a different subject, but altering a safety feature could bring on future problems. Enjoy the day, Frank.

Brokenarrow; yes business is booming, I just read an article written by an auctioneer who conducts auctions over a large part if the upper midwest. One of his comments was that CUT"S are the hottest selling item in the auction busines. Congrads on the new tractor, you'll love it. Good thing you got the tractor before the college bills start rolling in, We put four out of five kids thru, the last one was ten years ago, I'd hate to imagine what tuition rates must be now. Grinder, thanks for all those links. Sounds like your part of the country has lots of things going for it. I've allways been facinated by construction of any kind and I'm sure the size alone of those shipyards would overwhelm me. I read in lots of the woodworking magazines about the New England aeria having lots of fine craftsman building high end stuff. I've toured the JD combine works at the Quad Citys and the JD tractor works at Waterloo which are real amazing to me, but would seem tiny compared to something the size of the shipyards. The three biggest JD tractors we use at the farm, 8410, 8300, and 7810 have shaft sensors for ground speed plus a doppler gun that calibrates distance, the onboard computer calibraters the two at the rate of something like 200 times a second. The result is true ground speed from the doppler and also the percentage of wheel slip at any given time, acres covered per hour, etc. etc. When we got the 8410 new in either 2000 0r 01 Deere put a gps guidance unit on it for experimental purposes, it did'nt work too well then, but now they have the "Green Star System" that has been perfected enough that when you come to the end of the field to turn around you take the wheel and once you have manualy steered it to more than 180 degrees of the full turn you let go of the wheel and the GPS takes over and guides it to the other end of the field at the exact distance from the last pass that is required. We're not using the GPS yet, but I'm sure my son someday will. Sometime at the Deere dealer pick up a brocure for the 8000 twenty series or the 7000 twenty series, they have even more advanced features than our 10 series in the field of GPS. Frank.

I've also wondered how those things work. I looked at one from Land Pride on a dealers lot before I knew what it was. I think you set it at an angle similar to a rear blade then the rotating drum sorta kicks the rocks into a swath. Maybe someone can help us both out. Frank.

Mine has had that problem since new, but since we rarely take the hoe off it isn't much of an issue to me. I do have a simple cure that costs less than 5 bucks, but I won't share it because it probably isn't aproved by Deere. Frank.

Wow, if those Botas ride that nice I'll trade my Deeres off today. I wonder if his disabilaty insurance company aproves of his fund raiser? We have a summer home in Clermont, Iowa where most the movie "The Strait Story" was shot. This movie was a true story of Mr. Strait driving his JD rider from Laurens Ia. to his brother's home somewhere in SW Wisconsin. Deere did give him a new mower after they heard of the movie and the mower he drove and the homemade trailer he built are on display in Clermont. Not a real blockbuster movie, just kind of fun to watch. Hope this fellow doesn't get ran over. Frank.

I just checked the spec's page on the Deere website. It lists the turning radius as 7.5 ft. w/brakes and 8.9 ft. W/O brakes. I don't think you'll have any power problem with the wide mower deck as long as it's just regular lawn mowing duty, but unless you have a really level lawn my experience has been that a 60 in. deck is plenty wide so far as not scalping, leaving a nice level cut etc. I don't know if they measure the turning radius with the 4WD engaged or not, but running in 2 WD makes turning lots easier. Mid mount decks are quite pricey and a real pain to remove. If you need a tractor in the 4000 series size for other dutys besides mowing sometimes you can buy a real nice used rider for about the same money as a MMM on a 4000 series and avoid the hassel of removing and remounting the deck. Zippy; What are you wanting to power with the mid mount PTO pump? How many GPM is required for your needs? Beagle and jeffR both have good suggestions. In my own case I'm mounting a 20 GPM pump on the mid PTO of the 4410 for continous use to power grain auger orbit motors while at the same time the rear pto is also in use. I don't remember for sure what the GPM of the pump on a 4410 is, but I hooked an auger motor to the remote to try it and it would power the auger but just did'nt have enough volume to run it fast enough. Heat is another factor with continous use so a radiator and fan powered by a small orbit motow with bypass fluid from the main pump will feed it. My plans call for this to be a totaly self contained unit, pump, resirvor, filter, colling system, valving etc. Then mount some rails on the belly of the tractor so that the whole unit will hang from them, when it's not needed or in the way just unhook the PTO shaft, slide it out like a drawer with help of a transmision jack to suport it and sit it aside with no hoses, wires, cuouplers or anything else to unhook. My goal is a no muss no fuss simple system, but it isn't built yet so a few flies may get in the ointment before it's done, but those are my plans. Frank.

I really have tried to stay away from picking brands. I'll have to side with the 4310/ 430 loader/ rear blower combo. The big three Orange, Blue, and Green all build quality equipment. One of your main deciding factors should be the dealership reputation where you buy, that will make or break your enjoyment of your new tractor. The absolute lowest price isn't allways the best choice, you can save lots of bucks by going with a little known import that has a scanty dealer orginazation, that can leave you with an orphan down the road. My Dad allways said " Quality is like buying oats, they come a lot cheaper after they've been thru the horse". Welcome to the world of compacts, you'll love it. Frank.

Brokenarrow, being in the "Geezer" crowd now makes it harder to accept change I Guess. When I traded my 02 Chevy pickup for the 04 I said I just traded the nicest looking pickup I ever saw for the uglyest pickup I ever saw. I told the salesman the grille on that 04 is so ugly only a mother could love it, but as time has moved along I don't even notice now. Enjoy your day, Frank.

Zippy; I'm going to do the same thing to my 4410, I have all the componets on hand but time has been short lately. I've never looked at where the mid pto is located on a Kubota or how much room there is around it to mount things. So make sure you have room to put a universal joint shaft similar to what would power a mid mount mower, I would'nt advise mounting the pump directly to the pto shaft, been there done that, any slight mis alingment wears expensive things out real fast. I've did a lot of work with hydraulic motors, pumps, etc. It's not that hard to figure out what you need so far as a pump long as you know the displacement per revolution, operating rpm etc. Bring up "The Surplus Center" site, call their tech line they've allways been real helpfull so far as matching the equipment you need for the job you want to get done. There was a thread on the board just a couple weeks ago that got into this pretty deep, lots of good ideas there too, check it out. Best of luck, Frank.
