Botics; Get the oil Kubota recommends from the dealer. There are all kinds of oils available, but Kubota wouldn't recommend it if it were not the best for their tractors. They don't want early failures any more than you do. Frank.

Joel; I didn't mean white plastic snow fence, I never heard of that either. I meant the white plastic rail fence that is real popular now. You see it almost anywhere like around horse farms etc. Yes, I used to use the old wood lath type too, I don't know if it is still abvailable, but it would have to be high dollar by now. My concern is to have the white fence, probably the four rail for more snowfence effect to be decorative in most times, space it back from the driveway on the north and west sides far enough to serve as a snowfence, but never take it down. The Mrs. is concerned about trimming around the posts all summer, but my response is called "Roundup", the best string trimer ever invented. Frank.

KK; I'm not totaly up on three point hoes, but it seems that some offer a heavier duty top link or kit of some sort to help your top link of the three point hold the added stress. I don't really know what you mean about a mechanical advantage for frame mount hoes over three point mounts, but I do know that your Deere frame mount will be tons less stressfull on the tractor than any three point mount hoe. I'd sure try to stick with a frame mount in any size hoe. Frank.

Retcol; I'm not familliar with that particular model. But a few things that are common with any snow blowers are. #1- Rear mounts are normally easier to attach than front mounts. #2- Rear mounts are hard on the neck, front mounts are much easier to get close to things with simply because you can see what's happening better. #3 I don't think a short spout is a big concern, they will work OK. #4 The hand crank on the spout is just another thing to have to reach behind for, another neck bender. Hydraulic control spouts are nice if your tractor has a circut available. I've owned eitht foot rear mount blowers for farm tractors but never one for a CUT, so I can't tell you for sure, but it seems that a front mount would cost more than a rear because of a more complicated driveline setup, likely a subframe to attach to your tractor's front frame, etc. Hope this helps. I demoed a 4100 with a five foot rotary mower when the 4100's first came out. I think the HP is about the same for a 4115. The 4100 definetly had all it could handle and then some. I'd stick with the four footer. Frank.

I've been trying to remember what my first post was about, but can't, just too long ago. The owner of the local Deere dealership is the one who first gave me the web address for TP, I don't think I've ever saw him post, but I'm sure he is a member. That's kinda how and why I joined, now why do I stay? We from TP for the most part stay in the country away from the big city's, till a bit of soil, enjoy the wildlife, repair or build things, drive tractors, etc., We seem to share a common bond with those things. Even tho I've never met any of you face to face I almost feel like I've lived next door neighbors to the regular posters. All in all, just a nice place to share ideas, ask questions, etc. I plan to stay around for the long haul. Frank.

EW; My your memory is bad for a youngster. Surely you remember the loft I built that you were sure would collapse? Well, it got built, in fact the square footage got doubled, to about 1,800 sq. ft. It's full to the rafters with the equivilant a bit over of two loaded semi's weight in lumber, close as I can figure about 200,000 lbs. of lumber total, plus whatever could be piled on top of the lumber. Then the Hydro to Gear challenge on the losder shuttle bet we had on the new Lexus. All in good fun tho, you pick a side and we'll argue.
Murf; Your Saturday morning group remeids me of the one I go to also on Saturday mornings. That's really the only time I go to coffee anywhere. We met at one of the group's kitchen table usually four to six or seven of us, from the eldest, 79, 75, 66 (Me), 62, fiftyish for the rest. Mostly farmers. We really don't gossip about anyone(HONEST), except politicians, they are fair game. Just mostly the crop, the weather, health concerns about a neighbor or friend of the group, etc. The discussion can get lively, Deere vs. CaseIH, Pioneer vs. Dekalb, etc. but like EW and I nobody ever went home mad. I'm sure it was the Tructor or a simalar machine who had an info commercial on the RFD channel sometime back. They appeared to want to be the Swiss Army Knife type machine. My observation of Uni-Harvesters, and other such multi task farm machines from the past was that yes they will do all those things but never as well as a specific task oriented machine. 70 big ones, WOW, that would buy a good sized tractor and most any impliment you needed plus a Gator to zip around in. Kangaroo; Joel gave you a good rundown on the tread spacing issue. I think we need to go back to the differences in why specific tractor models were built. "Compact Utility" tactors were built for as the term says "Compact" reasons, to be used for most any application where tread width adjustment was not an important issue to acomadate row crops. They were purposely built with a narrow stance to be more usefull in cramped quarters. Row crop tractors on the other hand were built to accomadate row crop farming where tread width adjustment was easily changed usually by sliding the rear wheel in or out on the rear axle shaft. The front was either a tricycle type or an adjustable wide front. The most common row width today in corn and bean country is thirty inch spacing between rows, so the tread with of the tractors is centered on sixty inches. Dual rear wheels are usually left on year round anymore for safety reasons to help prevent rollovers, the duals are centered on a 120 inch spacing so they run between the next rows out without danmaging the crop. I'm with Joel in knowing nothing about raising vegatable crops, especially row widths, etc. So you need to first find out what row widths are used in truck gardens and what row width equipment, (Planters, cultivators, etc.) are comonly available for vegatable use then get a tractor that is either fixed tread width that will fit those rows or get a row crop tractor to be able to adjust the tread width to fit the equipment you will be using. OK; Time for a bit of rambling from me. First item, Parking brakes, I've never saw one yet except on a semi before the air gets built up that will not let the machine overwhelm it. I'll be the first to admit I've burned up a few. On a tractor with a foot brakes that lock together with the little flipper between the pedals, I never lock the pedals together for any reason. If I set the parking brake the results being with only one brake locked the tractor will tend to pull toward that side when you first move then you remember the parking brake. The other reason for never locking them together is for safety reasons, after a lifetime of driving farm tractors I feel much more in control in a panic situation when using one brake is better than both together. Ever try to reach down and flip the little lock in a split second? The crash has already occured. The folks who print up the little warning stickers about locking the pedals together aparently never drove a tractor much in a panic situation. The best parking brake ever invented for a CUT is the box blade, anytime I don't need the three point for somethiong else I have the box blade on for loader stability and simply for a parking brake, slick as a tater. AND EW, with the quick coupler I can have the box blade on or off in seconds without ever leaving the tractor seat. I don't think anyone in the farm tractor industry uses a true park "Lock" anymore where a paul droped into a transmission gear when engaged, that was a true park lock, nothing moved till you released it. They had their problems tho like disengaging it on a slope with loaded wagons behind, or on the old 706 and 806 Farmalls you could engage it while still moving, things got tore up fast insude. There was a trick you could do with the JD powershift lever that would fool it, but the Deere repair people liked it too when you tore up things after doing it enough times. I won't disclose the "Trick", but most of you with powershift Deeres of the 4430 era have already figured it out and those who haven't I don't want to be responsible for your transmission repair bill. Second issue "Goofer Dingers", on pickups. My last couple Silverados have had a dinger that tells you if the turn signal hasn't been cancelled, plus it dings for other reasons that I havent't figured out yet. OK, those of you who choose to drive "Rice Burners", do they have a "Goofer Dinger"? I'd better stop before I offend someone. Frank.

I'll have to kick in with Art on this one, I have saw sprung buckets and frames. A frame twist takes a bit of doing but it can be done. Friends like this no one needs. Straightening a sprung loader frame is not a simple task if doable at all. Did the "Friend" fess up to doing the damage when he returned the tractor? I am not very well trained in the diplomacy of handling matters such as this, but a "True Friend" would do what ever it takes to restore your loader to the condition it was before his abuse. Loaning equipment has been discussed here just lately, it is not a way to build friendships. In todays lawsuit happy world you likely are lucky this "Friend" did'nt get hurt and sue for the damages. We have a little place on the river up in northeast Iowa that has went begging so far this summer. Problem is that the first time is usually spent fixing whatever don't work and let's pray not a leak in the plumbing, the mobile home manufactutrers seemed to have a tube and fitting size all their own that NO hardware store stocks. One of the greatest parts of the trips to the river is that up there we have NO phone, and cell phones DON'T work. See you in a few days. Frank.

EW; Now what would be more boring than everyone on a board always being unanomus, (or however you spell it). I did my time on local school boards, church councils, corn growers boards, etc. When it came to spending money, or changing to newer ways of whatever subject a board has to handle it seemed we always had the old timer who saw his folks loose everything in the great depression who wouldn't spend a nickle or change from old policy all the way to the young tigers who couldn't spend or change fast enough. That makes a good board. Even my wife will tell you I'm not always right, but darn close in my opinion. Enjoy your HYDRO, and another note, my loft hasn't collapsed YET. Paraha; I'm afraid you would be wasting your money to set the walls of a building on a slab. You need a stem wall that goes a bit deeper than your normal frost penetration. The standard around here, (Eastern Iowa)is 42 inches below grade. If you are subject to any local building codes, I'm sure that your plan wouldn't be approved. If you are going to put the time and money into a building the footing and stem wall will make it a bit more exoensive but well worth it, the building will stand for a long time. Frank.

I've had the experience of Roudup not quite killing a weed with a single application. The local seed company agronimist told me to always on anything except grass to use a bit more than label rates and kill it the first tratment. He described as "Hardening Off" if you just kind of make a weed mad with a weak application and then for some reason they "Harden Off" as he calls it and won't absorb much of a second application. Grass is different, it seems to die with just a sniff of Roundup. Frank.

Klienkris; From what I've heard the dealers just don't want to mess with them and would way rather sell Gators. Reason being a Gator is considered a farm machine, no wavers, releases, on and on to fill out and sign to sell like a four wheeler to realese them and Deere, and anyone who even walked past the four wheeler from being sued someone gets hurt and sues everybody form the dealership, to Deere, to the driver who delivered it, on and on. I know nothing about Deere or any other brand four wheelers, I've never driven one. Frank.
