candarms; I have no idea what the effect would be on the plants you are going to water, but if you don't put a quart of Hilex in the tank with the water you will have the silmyest, stringest mess of alge in your tank in a few days you aeve saw. Been there done that with sprayer nurse tanks. Frank.

DRankin; This summer I'm working on installing a permanent generator system to take over during outages. Your comment on a computerized soft start system for your well pump caught my eye. I've totally forgotten the size or horsepower of our well pump, but I do remember it hangs at like around 350-400 ft., so it seems it would take lots of starting amps to get the water started up the plastic form that depth. Just wondered where you got the system. Thanks. Frank.

I still highly suspect you are sucking air somewhere between the oil pickup assembly and tha gears of the pump. You didn't run it long enough for the non diesel oil to ruin it. Leave the slick 50 at the parts store, a good engine don't need it. Kee trying you will find it. Frank.

Eric; I second DRankins advice. I don't care what brand tractor you buy, Green, Orange, or Blue, ALLWAYS buy their brand backhoe that was engeneered to fit with a factory subframe. You won't get much sympathy from your dealer when you tell him your brand X backhoe just ripped the three point off your new still under warranty tractor. Best of luck. Frank.

Ann; I have no idea which zero turn mower he was talking about, but a good friend of mine who is head of the lawn and garden service dept. at a good sized Deere dealership stoped by Sunday. He said that between the new XVU Gators and a certian model zero turn mower they are selling as fast as they can get them. That's all I know for now. Frank.

While I understand your excitment of wanting to perhaps grab a bargan before someone beats you to it maybe you should take a bit more time about it. A pickup truck today can cost twice what a compact tractor does, but you are still looking at a pretty good amount of money. We are always glad to welcome new tractor owners here and will help in any way we can, but I think you need to do som "Tire Kicking" before you buy a tractor on an impulse. My suggestion is to visit some dealerships first. Drive differnt ones then you will know whether you will like a GSD, (gear drive), or HST, (hydrostatic drive), have the dealer show you what a "Bucket" is, a "three poitnt", etc. Perhaps the tractor in the paper is not the right size for you? Go to more than one dealer. The major brands, Kubota, Deere, CaseNH, all have extensive dealer networks and will be there to take care of your parts and service needs for a long time. I think this is your first step, we will be here to help along the way. Frank.

Joel; I see you are from the great state of North Dakota, been there a few times have some good friends up there, all of them 100% Kraut, just like me. You know you can always tell a German, but you can't tell him much at a time. Any how my love for gears, I grew up on "H's" and "M's", one neighbor had Moline tractors, a Z a U and a Standard tread G. took a good M to keep up with the U, but I did'nt like sitting three ft. behind the rear axle down in the dust. As a teenager I drove grain trucks old enough they did'nt have sycncromesh, so I had to learn double clutching, this was before I was old enough to have a drivers licence, but the cops never bothered us, I wasn't the only kid who did that back then, long as you drove right they never said anything. I bought a new Farmall 656 gear drive in about 1965, my Uncle bought a new 656 Hydro in about 67 or 68, it was great for PTO work on the baler, but did'nt have enough power for the Fox chopper in good corn. In heavy tillage that tractor sure kept the gas man busy, Uncle soon traded it. In 73 I got my first Hydro combine an IH 715, had hydro combines till I retired, last one was a 9610 Deere. hydros were wonderful in combines, but drive wheel power needs were secondary to the power requirements of the seperator, so the infinite speed ability out weighed the power loss of the hydro. I've had a bad right foot for a couple years, that I have great hope will be corrected by the Doctors at Mayo Clinic later this summer. With a bad right foot my 12/12 Power reverse Deere is much easier to operate being I hardly need to use my right foot. This past December I bought my first pickup with a "Marshmallow Box", I traded in my 04 Silverado gear, If it had'nt been for the bad foot I would have bought another gear without queation. Wow, talk about timeing, I have basicly the same thing to do soon as the addition to the shop is complete, the concreet crew is stripping the forms as we speak.
A bit of background on my portable buildings. One is 12X12 and the other is 10X12. Both were used in my former shop building, the 12X12 as a glue room and the smaller one as a finish room. They were in an unheated portion of the old shop and both were heated by electric radiant heaters and cooled and humidity controled by an earth system of buried field tile forced air system, (Home made, but it worked) both are 2X6 walls and ceileng with roll insulation, unfinished chipboard on the outside and taped sheetrock on the inside walls. What you might call the roof is just 3/4 ply flat on the 2X6 ceiling joists and was used for storage. the 12X12 has three green treated 4X6's on edge underneath and the smaller one has two running the 12 ft. direction. I no longer need these buildings in the new shop as the aerias where I will glue and finish are in the heated section. The new shop is about four miles form the old shop, all rural roads, no towns, no bridges, they're not tall enough to bother power lines, so a fork lift, a Dnahue trailer and a 4020 will have them over here in a little bit. Getting them to this point seems not to be a problem, but now I would like to put them inside the new addition of my shop that will have a 2 in. crushed limestone floor deep enough that the rats can't dig in or thru it. I'd like to have the bigger one tight into a 90 degree corner of the building and smaller one tight aginst the building wall and the side of the 12X12. Building on EW's idea of the PVC, I've got five or six round creosote poles about 8 in. in diamater and 14 ft. tall. some of you around here are old enouigh to remember what a REAL creosote pole was, not those worthless things they pass off today that rot off in ten years. Any way slide the buildings against the wall and just leave the poles there. Both buildings have a 6X6 overhead door and a 36 inch steel entrance door with good locks. I've got quite a few specialized tractor shop type tools that are better kept out of sight, there are always the "Casual Aquaintance" type folks that will ask you to borrow a tool that may have cost a thousand bucks or more, and worst of all they don't have a clue how to use it. Anyhow if you aren't asleep by now any suggestions on refining my plan would be apreciated. Frank.

EW; I do want you to sleep tonight so I'll fill you in a bit on the loft('s) construction. The floor joists are those "Mickey Mouse" looking beams made of two 3X3's with a strip of chipboard between them. I asked for 2X12 floor joists, but the "Engeneer" we consulted with said his chipboard masterpieces were twice a strong as any 2x12, so we used them. They are supported by the original 2X6 studs, spaced on 16 inch centers on the outside wall of the building and the other end of the joists is suported by a studded wall made of 2X10's centered on 16 inches. The space between the 2X10 studs is being utilized as parts bins, so kinda the two bird with one rock theory. Sleep well. Frank.

Brian, your Kubota dealer is so right, your 3130 is a nice tractor, please don't destroy it with a 3 pt. backhoe. I don't know how far you want to go in saving the hoe, but I will tell you the tale of a neighbor of mine in your same situation and how he solved it. He like you bought a used Kelly, I don't know the model number, to put on the 3 pt. hitch of his Farmall 656 farm tractor, (65 HP.). After he mounted it he was acared that it would rip the three point or worse off the back of his tractor. It is a nice hoe, very little wear so he did want to save it. He took an "M" Farmall, (45 HP), built a heavy sub frame that extends from the backhoe under the rear axles of the "M" to the channel iron tractor frame along side the engine. he runs the hydraulic with a PTO driven pump. He did a real nice job, but this is a permanent installation, it don't come off the tractor. Pretty slick deal, he does nice work. He never would tell me how much it cost him to buy the "M", the steel,(the main frame is 10 inch channel) and all the hydraulic plumbing, etc. cost. He like myself is still of 100% German bloodline, and we Germans are NOT stubborn, we are determined at any cost to prove it can be done. Frank.

if you want a four wheel wagon watch the farm consignment auctions. Quite often you can pick up a used flare box on a conventional four wheel wagon gear complete with a hiost for a hunderd bucks or less. I've got several around that I use for every thing from a dump wagon to lumber storage, kind of a lumber rack on wheels that cost basicly nothing compared to buying something or building something new. Sean; In your first sentence you say "Spun Bearing", this has me wondering if a faulty oli pump wasn't the cause of the needed overhaul. Your satement that after a startup the pressure comes right up then drops to zero for a second or two then goes back to normal highly indicates there is an air leak that breaks the suction between the float screen and the actual gears of the pump. Your problem is not consistent with oil escape after it leaves the gears of the oil pump. Something is wrong that breaks the suction, perhaps when the float drops a bit going to the oil level you get the momentary drop because something opens an air gap for a bit, or maybe the float hesitates a bit before droping to the oil level. Take the pump off get a rebuilt one, I think your mystery will be solved. just a side note which would have no bearing on your present problem. did you replace the camshaft bearings, they are often overlooked and can be a big contributor ot low oil pressure at warm operating temps. Is it a John Deere belt? If so a call to the parts dept. at a Deere dealer, they will check the part number for you. Most Deere decks have a decal somewhere on top of the deck detailing the route of the belt thru the pulleys and idlers, check that. Are the bearings loose in the blade spindle ('s) or the idlers? Have you checked the battery cables, the ground connection from the battery to the frame? Sometimes a little emery cloth on the frame where the ground cable connects and a NEW bolt will do wonders. If you have a volt meter use it to check the continuity from the batery thru the key switch, if you have continuity that far then just keep going from the battery to the next switch, conector or where ever a possible break in a circut could be, on and on till you find the loss of continuity. You will find it, just keep going. Beat of luck. Frank.

When the 3020's and 4020's came out with the 8 speed power shift people were a bit skeptical of them but they actually gave less troubles than the syncro's. I looked at a 4020 power shift on an auction once that had the linkage between the shift lever and the transmission wore out so bad you weren't sure which gear you had it in, but the transmission it's self still worked fine. Drankin; You would be more than welcome at the church picnic, they are usually in August, but I don't know which weekend yet. it is always a pot lock, so maybe if you brought a rattlesnake casorole, and maybe a couple baked armidillo's, us flatlanders would pig out on that and possibly we could slip some fresh sweet corn and pork loin or maybe some CORN FED roast beef on your plate you would pass out from over eating and never get to discuss pickups.
