I have a Ford 1710 compact tractor with a 3 cylinder Shibaura diesel engine built between 1983 - 1986 (ID: XUL 00704; Model: AL3136; Unit: 305B; Engine: SN# H843 18754)

The engine threw a rod through the side of the block. I got a used block that was mag tested, new crank, oil pump, bearings, etc. and we can not get the oil pressure above 27psi (spec is 37-57).

We have consulted with numerous people for some reason that would account for the low pressure. We have tried everything anyone mentioned... so I think we've covered the obvious.

Do you know anyone with experience rebuilding these engines? This is the third engine in this tractor and I'm wondering if there might be something unique about this engine that we don't know about. We had the Ford repair manual which was helpful, but not on this issue.

Have you tried a different pressure guadge? Sending unit? Partialy blocked line? Kinked?

Oil pump assembly sucking air some where? Hiarline crack in pickuptube?

What kind of oil? ....

I'm not the mechanic, but I know he has tried 3 different kind of pressure gauges, checked for blocks or kinks or suching air. I'm not sure about the hairline crack inb the pickup tube.

He used 30 weight oil for diesel. That is something I did wrong, when I changed the oil, I didn't realize there was different oil for diesel engines, so maybe that contributed to the throw rod.

I'm wondering if I use some of that Slick 50 type product, if I could run it at 27psi. The mechanic doesn't think the oil will get to the top of the engine.

I'm still wide open for suggestions and thanks for trying! jhaems ....

I still highly suspect you are sucking air somewhere between the oil pickup assembly and tha gears of the pump. You didn't run it long enough for the non diesel oil to ruin it. Leave the slick 50 at the parts store, a good engine don't need it. Kee trying you will find it. Frank. ....

We had an SUV once that's oil pressure dropped to ZERO per the guage. It sounded like it also. The mechanic dropped the oil pan and pump, found no damage and no reason but it went back to proper pressure with that. They guessed the pressure regulating valve in the engine was stuck open and the removal of it jarred it enough to remove what ever was keeping it open. Have no idea if this is possible on your engine or not. kt ....

I think Kenneth is on the right track.

We rebuild a LOT of equipment & engines, getting good rebuilt components is getting tougher & tougher as time goes on, a result of off-shore out-sourcing I think.

It has gotten to the point where we bench test each pump, oil or hydraulic, BEFORE they get put inside, about 15% of them fail the test and are exchanged. We have been told by the suppliers it is the same with starters and alternators too.

I would do as Harvey suggested and put a known gauge on it first, if it really is not making any oil pressure then start looking inside.

In order of likelyhood to occur, my money is on; 1) bad pressure relief valve, 2) incorrect assembled oil pump (or sump line is not installed right), 3) error in re-assembling the engine.

Best of luck. ....

I have a Ford 1710 and I'm looking for a Mechanic that I can pay to help me online to do some repairs, like the PTO clutch. I'm ordering another manual as I can't find the one the guy gave me who sold me the tractor way back. ....
