We've got a tow behind that works ok long as you make sure you shut off the spreader durning turn arounds or slow downs, but it's hard to reach, otherwise it doesn't spread wide enough and leaves streaks. Perhaps a 3pt. would have an easier way to turn the outlet gate on and off during turns and slow downs. Frank.

It's really too bad that we as Americans did'nt take the first oil shortage more seriously in the 1970's. Perhaps by now we could by another energy source be less dependent on OPEC. Most everyone was upset by President Nixon when he put the 55 speed limit in force, but first of all id did save lives and also fuel. Even today with the high price of fuel you hear about people demanding higher speed limits and luxury gas guzzlers still seem to be the "Thing". I'm not excluding myself here because I like horsepower and the freedom to go places that I really could do without too. I won't get into the policys of politicians or oil co's, I have opinions yes, but not enough solid knowledge to discuss most of that. Maybe if we all just backed off the throttle by 10 MPH. that would be a little help. Frank.

A relative of mine used to use a three gang mower on his "Super Size" lawn. His yard allways looked like the White House lawn, but even he with his patience of a saint he finally grew tired of all the maintinence and now uses a MMM. Frank.

Cappy TX. If you service your own pickup then you have the skills to take care of your tractor. Normaly only basic hand tools and you owners manual will get you thru it fine. Far as hooking up three pt. equipment alone, having a quick coupler on the three pt. is a real big help. Deere calls theirs the I Match System, but there are many other brands to chose from. Being on a level surface is a real big help too, even with a quick coupler. I started out without a quick coupler, but even the small equipment can get to be a real pain to jiggle around till the pins line up. Best of luck. Frank.

Be careful of switching to filters that will fit. Some engines require an anti-drain back valve, some need a relief valve in the filter, plus mincron size, flow rate, etc. etc. Be sure their specs. match all the requirements of the tractor mfg's. brand. Not really worth the risk, your shipping cost from your dealer will likely be less than the cost to drive to another source. Frank.

It's getting common here to see about as many "road kill" cats as raccons and skunks anymore. We still seem to have people who think taking an unwanted dog or cat out in the country and dumping them is OK. Another rural problem that seems to be getting worse is the dumping of junk in the rural ditches. Just this past summer within a 5 mile radius I have saw junk lumber, car parts, washing machines, bed springs, refrigerators, and garbage bags full God only knows what. I haven't, but neighbors have found meth making garbage inside of field drives too. Frank.

I've never saw one except in their TV ads a couple years ago, the local dealer said he'd never sold one so I just got to wondering if they are still produced. Has anyone on the board had any experience with one? I really don't need one, but just got to wondering how they turned out. Frank.

Other than cars and pickups what other coice do we have other than diesel? Indoor forklifts are about the only thing we see using propane. A friend of mine used to use propane powered medium duty trucks, but doesn't anymore because they were worthless at trade in time. Hydrogen is another possibility, but I think that's a long way off. The soydiesel and ethanol look to be our best solution, but I don't know how long that can keep up to demand. When will we stop using diesel? We really can't, perhaps we can combine trips, etc., build more efficent engines I don't know, but for right now we're kind of at the mercy of our supplyers. Frank.

earthwerks: The thing you're talking about we called a slip scraper. When I was a kid I helped my Uncle use one. He walked along behind it hanging onto the wooden handles till it got full then I think he just let it tip over frontwards to dump. I drove the tractor to pull it up out of the hole, then after he dumped it he would drag it back down into the hole. I saw one at a sale a few years ago, so some are still around. Frank.

I've never been around foam filled tires. Does the foam turn into a solid or semi solid material once it's in the tire? When the foam filled tire does wear out is the foam a problem for removal from the rim? Frank.

Oliver; Whatever combination you end up with try to keep the box scraper just a bit wider than the total width of your tractor even if you have to take shallow bites. Best of luck. Frank.

We haven't had any trouble yet, maybe just luck. I do try to park things out of sight or in a shed if available. I've heard more about vandalisim than theft locally. Sometimes just tire valve cores pulled, but there have also been some spray paint incidents. Frank.

I've driven a 9000 series Deere track machine similar to the Cat rubber track at a demo day. I haven't saw a lot of them localy for farm use, but the road construction people seem to be using them quite heavily, I think bcause they can be driven where a steel track would'nt be allowed, and track maitinence may be less for rubber? Frank.

StephenR; Either system will get the job done but will require different preparations. A moldboard plow does have an advantage of turning under greater amounts of old crop residue that will clog a tiller. If the plow leaves the soil pretty rough then a disk and harrow will be needed after the plow and each pass adds back to the compaction you were trying to relieve in the beginning. As was said before mowing the aeria first then spraying with roundup at least a couple weeks ahead of tiller use will produce a very nice seedbed in one pass. With either machine wait till the soil is good and dry, working it too wet makes either big clods with a plow or marble size ones with a tiller. My vote goes to the tiller. Frank.

BigBob; The old style wide fronts like on shinefeaks "H" with the tie rods out front are getting hard to find that aren't worn out or welded up, so yes a real nice all original one is geting kind of rare. Frank.

rambling; I've got one of each, the only place I've noticed much difference is in heavy rotary cutter (MX5) work, the 4410 just does it a little easier, other than that the 4310 will do you fine. Frank.

The clamp style front rim wasn't used for a lot of years till they went to the more common rim with the three lugs riveted on the rim that bolted to the cast hub. I've had lots of old Farmall stuff around, but never owned one with that style rim. The clamp in your picture looks a lot like the rear wheel rim clamps, they may be the same. If they are the same there are lots of them around. Best of luck. Frank.

I've had a rear mount farm tractor size blower for years. It will make a lot of snow dissapear in a hurry. It's easy to mount and did'nt cost a lot. I've allways admired a front mount for the same reasons as you, but granted they are pricey. The last few winters haven't been so bad so I've got along with a pickup plow and haven't had to use the blower. Perhaps you get lots of snow and a blower is an all winter machine, then that's adifferent story. Frank.
