Ibrown/Murf; You too are correct in your concept of ultimate in snow removal. My first choice is the pickup with the plow, I like being warm and the faster transport time from job to job. When I bought my pickup plow the dealer told me very sternly not to get the idea that I could ram snow banks like the county truck with the V plow, everything has it's limits. When I said that a blower is the ultimate I meant that when it was too much for the pickup you get the FEL then in the most severe cases you use the blower when there's no place left to push more snow. Thank goodness we've not has a winter that bad for a few years, but there were times in the past when the county trucks and graders with V plows gave up and they brought in a monster blower to get people out. Here in eastern Iowa most water lines are 5 1/2 - 6 ft. deep, and you seldom hear of a feeze up. I think they call it "Iowa one call" around here, long as you call them a couple days ahead they'll come out and locate any nearby utilitys. Just something I finally learned after digging the yard up again to add something new. Plastic underground electrical conduit is real cheap, so the last couple times we've dug a water line or electic service across the yard just lay an empty 2-3 in. conduit in the trench along with whatever you're installing, someday it'll come in handy. DennisCTB; Another reason pickups got so popular several years ago was the no matter the cost of the pickup the plates were $35., I think they're $65 now in Iowa. I just wondered if an SUV is licensed as a pickup or an auto. I also wasn't aware you could spend 100,000. on an SUV. Seems like betwen the plates and the insurance in a large metro aeria like D.C. that the cost of those items would be immense. Again, just wondering. Frank.

tomrscott; I got thr hyperthrem 1000 mainly because of the dealer. I honestly haven't had time to use it enough yet to give it real test, but so far it's worked fine. Frank.

I've never been involved in puting water lines is a concreet floor, but I know there are several in our aeria. My queston has allways been about the cracks in the floor where they saw the expansion joints. What keeps the pipes from cracking too when the concreet shrinks back from the crack? Frank.

We learned the hard way quite a few years ago to turn off the main water valve to the house before going on any more than an overnight vacation. We had a built in dishwasher in the farmhouse where we used to live and sometime while we were gone on a three day vacation one of the hoses to the dishwasher burst. We have no idea how long the water had been flowing but the furnace vents were acting as floor drains in the kitchen and dining room. Wow what a homecoming, but fortunately the insurance co. we were with picked up most all of the damage expense. Frank.

Someone down the road a few miles from us bought an old abondon farm building site that had gotten over grown with trees and brush to the point you could hardly walk thru it. What they did looked like a good idea but it did'nt work. Most of the trees were 30-40 ft. tall and very spindly. They went in and thinned out the poorer looking ones and left the better looking trees. We had quite a windstorm a while after and most all of the trees they left went down, aparently when they are that thick they depend on each other for support during a windstoem. Frank.

I'll be the first to admit that I don't like OSB either, but when we uilt our house they talked me out of ply for the floor. We put down 3/4 OSB and it seems to be doing fine without a squeak yet. The roof sheathing OSB however got rained on before the tar paper got rolled out and you can still pick out the swelled seams from the road on a frosty morning. Frank.

Plasma doesn't work too well on old rust coated steel, acetylene and oxygen are getting high priced plus you're talking about an immense amount of cleanup with a hand grinder to make all those discs fit. And to complicate things more than likely the discs you cut out are going to heat warp with acetylene. I really don't want to be a gloom and doomer about your project but why not just buy a set of weights, I think you'll spend less in the end. Frank.

They are still calling for 8-12 here in east central Iowa, I'm going out now to put the plow on the pickup hoping that will handle it, but the tractor/loader is plugged in too. Keep warm. Frank.

Iowafun; When we built the house we now live in about 8-10 yrs. ago, I acted as my own general contractor, at that time you saved a hefty 10% on materials and cost of sub contractors by hiring and paying them yourself, BUT you learn a lot real fast. I knew the reputation of the man who dug the basement, the cement people, carpenter crew, sheet rockers, plumbers, etc.. They all did a fine job. The landscaper that I hired I really did'nt know and did'nt take the time to check him out. The man who dug the basement piled the topsoil and the clay seperately like I expected, then this disreputable landscaper made a total mess just mixing it back together, spreading a little seed, straw, sending me the bill and left the country. I finally just paid him to get rid of him, we've been working on it every since to make a decent yard. My point in all this rambling is that you were an indirect victum of a person like I dealt with. Far as how to correct it, we've just been patching in with topsoil where the worst spots were and after several summers and lots of bluegrass seed it's shaping up pretty well. Lots of luck. Frank.

I'm not saying it is the correct way, but for many years all I've ever done os put a few drops of motor oil on top of the posts at oil change time. I've been told it will ruin the battery, etc., etc., but I've really never had a battery go bad that was traced to me puting oil on the posts. I tried the red spray can stuff, it really never gets underneath where it's needed. Oil works and it's cheap. Frank.

I don't have any info for a 790, but someone with a 90 series tech manual could probably do you some good to. My 4000 series tech manual has several real nice color coded schematics of the hydraulic system and all the accesories that pertain to it. Perhaps your dealers service dept. would let you copy some pages. Frank.

I don't know about the going price for a 4455, but like Art said they were about as bullet proof mechanicaly as tractors got. They were the last Deere series before the computer controled transmissions, injection pumps etc. A nice 4450 or 4455 is real good property. Also they were the biggest Deere of that series to still have both PTO speeds as standard equipment. If it's a nice one it will bring good money. Frank

Not knowing how much aeria you have to mow or what quality of cut you're after brings up another factor. If you're doing "Front yard" mowing a narower deck will allways do a nicer job unless your lawn is dead flat, (ours is'nt). I've got an 84 in. rear mount on the 4410. I works great for roadside, road ditch, and waterway mowing where absolute quality is'nt important, but the front yard is out. Best of luck. Frank.

jonmw; The two wheel drive market has shrunk into almost lawnmower class now since so many attachments are available for Compacts. With these attachments we can get now a compact will do an amazing amount of work, but most all of them rely on the help of a front wheel assist. You won't believe how much more effecent a FEL, Box blade, backhoe, even getting caught mowing in a wet ditch you'll be. Resale is another factor, they can be kinda hard to resell. Happy New year.
