I'm thinking of buying a Kubota L3830 or the MX5000. I don't think I need a 4WD model since I will use it mostly in good conditions. I have used a John Deere 950 since 1979 on my cattle farm of 115 acres. I hire out hay work these days but need to do a lot of bush hogging and I need to do a fair amount of landscaping and road improvement. I have a 5 ft landscape box and bush hog. I would want draft control for plowing and I hope it would help with bush hogging over terrace rows. I think I can live with the synchronize shift since reliability and cost are large considerations.
This seems like a really good board and spent about 2 hours last night reading old msgs - example - need to trailer it with 1/2 ton pickup - very interesting.

In my humble opinion:
2WD + FEL = Usable.
4WD + FEL = HOW DID I SURVIVE WITH ONLY 2WD?? ....

I try like heck to remember what it was like without 4wd on my old kubota l175. it was lousey to say the least! If you get any kind of heavy weight in the bucket and not enough rear weight you will find the rear wheels spinning even on the slightest of hills due to traction loss. It is rare that my Kubota is out of 4wd these days. it improves traction and braking alike. My 2wd drive machine are rendered useless for me with my small hills all over my property. ....

The 5000 in two wheel drive would be about equal to a 3830 four wheel drive in pulling power. You do have added horsepower on the 5000 but with the loader the 3830 would run away with it. You are looking at two different style of tractors and there is the same basic controls of the MX in the L-series that offer 40 plus horsepower and are very economical to own. If you could also go one size of attachments for either tractor. For what you have in land if the 5000 is the four wheel drive go for it! ....

Thanks, guess it wasn't a good idea but wanted to ask the experts anyway since I have never used a FEL. I can see that it would take weight off the rear and therefore make it tend to spin - had not thought of that. The MX5000 seems the choice for a more basic version - the dealer I talked to had both but was pushing the L3830 - I wonder if its because of all the flashing lights reminding about maintance - do they get a lot of extra shop work with all those lights?? I wonder if you need a special tool to reset them ?

Hello Johnmw,
I have a L3430 and the electronics have been no problem at all. It has been outside since I bought it in May, 2003.
Resetting is very easy, just hold both buttons down for three seconds.
4wd is the only way to go for bucket work. If you do any digging or work in a pit you won't get back out in 2wd.

jonmw; The two wheel drive market has shrunk into almost lawnmower class now since so many attachments are available for Compacts. With these attachments we can get now a compact will do an amazing amount of work, but most all of them rely on the help of a front wheel assist. You won't believe how much more effecent a FEL, Box blade, backhoe, even getting caught mowing in a wet ditch you'll be. Resale is another factor, they can be kinda hard to resell. Happy New year. John, look at the L-4400 still a flat deck tractor or you might find a 4300 some where yet and the price in four wheel drive will be less then the 5000 and you get the best of both worlds. It's in between the two sizes you are considering. By the way the last time I checked the Kubota computer was only 200 dollars and we haven't had any issues with them. ....
