After several weeks of research and talking to dealers I was ready to go order a new Kubota 2910 Saturday morning, I have a price of $18,300 (tax includes) for a 2910 w/FEL, 61" bucket with teeth, 5' bush hog, rear SCV and R/4 tires. I was reading my morning paper over coffee and I found an ad for a 2002 JD 790 4WD with only 82 hrs. I called and the guy was selling a package consisting of the tractor with 419 FEL, 62" tilller, 5' box scrape, 5' rear finish mower, R4 tires and a 6.5 x 18 ft. trailer for $15,000! He had bought it new to build a house and put in his lawn. The finish mower didn't work to his liking and he has little use for the tractor( lives in a subdivision). I had looked at the 790 but really liked the HST transmission over the collar shift, and my local JD dealer was going to charge me about the same thing the Kubota dealer was for the 2910. How I really wondering what to do. Is the 2910 worth the $5000 difference (considering I was going to buy a new trailer anyway) and is this a good deal on the 790? It sure looks good based on what I have seen and read on different tractor sites. I know the 2910 has a few more bells and whistles but is it worth the difference? Most of my need is for pasture mowing and some light loader work, mostly redoing some landscaping and build my wife several raised beds for her garden. Would appreciate some opinions. I had my head set on the 2910 but the money difference stopped me dead in my tracks! I don't really need or want the finish mower (I hate grass, except ia a pasture) and box scrape so I figured I could sell them for enough to buy a good rotary mower and if lucky have a little left to purchase a pto log spliter. What would you do! Pros and Cons.

Visit the johndeere website, under the 90 series tractor, there is a 'compare' option on the drag down menu. You can compare the 790 to the Kubota B7800. They don't compare to the B2910, probably because the B7800 is the economy version of the 2910 that is more comparable to the 790.
Make sure the tractor has 4-wd if you plan to do loader work. Hope this helps. ....

If you can live with a very basic tractor, and you can fit in the 790's limited operator space, you will have a very reliable, nearly bulletproof machine.
While it is quite capable of doing the jobs you have outlined, the 790 has less hydraulic flow and pressure than the Kubota. This will be most noticeable if you hook it to a log splitter. The splitter will develop plenty of power but you will sacrifice some speed of operation.

An L-2800 would be a more accurate comparison as far as price and features altough it to has more horsepower then the 790 but it is over a grand less then the 7800 and several thousand less then the 2910. ....

Both are great machines. Make sure you thoroughly test each machine out. As Mark mentioned, space is an issue on the 790 operator's station as compared to the Kubota's and it is a very basic but realiable (bullet proof as Mark mentioned) tractor. I would suggest going with the machine that has the ergonomics that suit you best and meets the use requirements you have in mind. I would also carefully consider the dealer who will be supporting you and your machine. This can really be an important factor down the road. If you are unsure of whether you can live with a collar shift vs. HST; then I would STRONGLY recommend you do more research and looking. Best to take the time to get what you will be satisfied with the first time. ....

A good friend of mine & competitor landscaper had a 2910. I owned a 790 for 5 years. Although you probably wont use it to do the things we do with our tractors, I was always envious of his tractor. He had sooo many advantages like loader capacity lifting wieght, reaching height, etc. Dont get me wrong, I accomplished alot of work with that 790 & it is a " bullet proof" unit. It took me longer to accomplish taskes than it took him on his 2910 & I had to push my machine harder then he had to. Also, If I had a penny for everytime I slammed my knees into the dash board I would be a millionaire! I'm 5'10 so if your taller then me, You may want to think about it. ....
