I have a JD755 with a 60" belly mower with the mulching kit. When mowing grass it does well, but if I get in weedy grass, it doesn't do very well...unless I mow backward. If I cut the grass in reverse, it does an excellent job regardless of the purity of the grass. Does anyone know why this is so? Does it have anything to do with the texture of weeds or the air flow under the deck?

The culprit is your mulching kit. It is only the fact that you are trying to mulch a larger quanity of grass than the system can handle at once. When you cut in reverse, it changes the flow of the system, allowing it to process it through faster. If you have an air-tunnel (high air flow type of deck) mower, I would question the use of a mulching kit, the two will be "arguing" if you will, since they work on opposite principals. The easy solution...keep the grass very well cut. I hope this helps you understand the situation. ....

Can any one tell if a muclhing kit would do for leaves? I have so many in the fall and I can't aford a bagger for my 755.thanks ahead of time. ....

Dana,I recently purchased the mulching kit for our 4100 with 54" deck, and have mixed emotions about it. Mulching grass & chopping leaves, it has worked very well to this point. It also creates a margin of safety, because your discharge is blocked. For us, this means (dog)bones or rocks/stones/sticks won't end up through a window. The real test of mulching leaves will come this fall, when we accumulate a 2-4" blanket of leaves every few days. My expectations are relatively low. One thing I am also pondering at the moment is soil PH. I have heard that tree leaves increase the acid PH level in soil. Mulching will only increase this problem, because we have bagged the leaves in the past.Also disturbing, my available top speed has dropped significantly. Otherwise it acts like a mower deck with really dull blades while mowing fast. I know this isn't the case, because the blades are brand new. Maybe this is the nature of a mulching kit. ....

Couldn't you just lime the turf to control the Ph? It would seem that the turf building effect of the mulch would be a positive effect. ....

I agree Alan,Dana indicated that she didn't have money for a bagger. Thus applying an appropriate amount of lime may also be out of the budget, not to mention the need to have/rent a spreader. I am also looking to lime our 2 acre yard this fall, and can tell you it isn't the cheapest thing in town. I would assume farmers get a quantity discount, plus they don't have to use pelletized lime. Otherwise I don't see how a farmer could afford to lime without taking out a loan. ....

I have a 755 w/ 60" mower and will be getting a mulcher kit soon to deal with cutting grass and not having to rake it, returning nutrients, etc. The key to mulchers on a lawn is REGULAR, FREQUENT cutting so that you aren't taking very much off at one time. For leaves, I use a collector attached to the mower and it works very well but even here it will bog down and you have to go slowly and the collector fills (and clogs) fairly rapidly if the leaves are thick (which they are - I do this once in the fall after all leaves are down and then once lightly in the spring to get the last little bit). As far as mulching leaves in place is concerned, if you are getting 2-4" of leaves every couple of days and you mulch them in place, you will generate such a mat of ground up leaves that your grass will never come back. You must collect and compost separately and then you can put the compost down to enrich the soil. ....

I agree Norm,BTY: my father has a trac-vac blower system, and that thing handles leaves/clogs very well. I plan to head this route as well. ....
