I was reading about some companies getting fined for calling people after they registered with them on their own do not call list. I still get tons of calls during meals and even on my cell phone. Some of these vendors say, "I am not with sales, I am with promotions." What do I care? It is sales any way you look at it rationally.

I currently have a pay service where calls from solicitors are blocked if they do not display their caller ID. There is a message that tells salesmen to go away, but the good salesmen do not pay any attention to the message and call anyway. At least I can see who they are on the caller ID.

So now, I have a pay service to screen/deter these guys, I have a set of phones that displays caller ID, and I still get calls. Even though the US government hasn't worked through the turf battles on this, there is a national "Do Not Call" registry. You can register on line at www.donotcall.gov You may enter up to three phone numbers. They will send you an email within minutes that you must confirm to be on the list. It is fairly easy.

I don't know if it works or not, but it is one extra weapon in the arsenal. There are some exclusions to the rules, but the fines are significant for violators. The registration is good for five years.

We have four lines coming into our house for my home office, so I installed a Panasonic KSU system that has voice mail.

The voicemail is programmed to pick up the phone and announce "this party does not accept solicitation calls from anyone. If you are a telemarketer, please add this number to your do-not-call list and hang up, otherwise press 2 to talk to us".

After installing this four years ago our telemarketer calls just stopped and we haven't had a single call since that time. My envious brother bought an el-cheapo system off ebay and programmed it to do the same thing and he has had the same results. If you have the time, money, and inclination it might be worth a try. ....

My voice message is similar, but it runs as a pay service from the telephone switch that Qwest owns. It costs about $60 per year, but we have had it for two years and we still get some calls. A lot of commercial callers have their caller ID blocked. If they have caller ID blocked, they cannot get through the Qwest system. Those that come through the system are ID'ed by my phone system and I can choose whether to answer or not.

We also get nuisance faxes on the fax line. Those generally come in the middle of the night. I disabled the ringer on that line. I would get a phone call in the middle of the night and think that it might be some family emergency only to have a fax tone in my ear when I get to the phone.

Another proposal that I heard that I thought was clever involved a reverse 900 system. IF a commercial caller wants to call you, they can but only if they are willing to pay $5 per minute or some other fee of your choice. ....

I like the 900 number idea. Of our 3 lines 2 have do not call the other is fax/modem. I usually unless I am in a really bad mood will sit a chat with them for as long as I can just to see where they will go on overtime. For some reason we do not get many calls either.

WHAT I'D LIKE TO SEE IS DO NOT SPAM... ....

Yeah, a DO NOT SPAM registry would be great except it would never work. The majority of spam comes from out of the country where our laws are useless. ....

I agree about the spam. I get a hundred or more of these things a day.

I wonder what they would do if the nuisance callers started their boiler room operations in other countries soliciting in the US? ....

Guess I'll ease up on my whinning about the 60-80 each day.

A funny thing Art's humour comes as spam labeled. My ISP has a spam filter/flag.

Art I usually cross addresses and do look at them. ....
