Can any one tell me the correct method of starting a diesel
engine, I move the throttle to mid way, or even a little bit more, start the tractor and back off the throttle to a fast idle. Someone told me this is wrong and that I should not advance throttle when starting.

I do pretty much the same as you except I only move mine to between 1/4 and 1/2. Not aware that there is a problem with that method. I have to move mine since completely off shuts down the engine. ....

That's what I do as well. I suppose I open the throttle less in the summer and more in the winter. Opening the throttle is sort of a diesel equivalent to a choke and I suppose it's best to open the throttle no more than it takes for easy starting.

The 'problem' mentioned likely is that injectors inject fuel that washes oil off the cylinder walls until the engine catches and the fuel ignites. That happens both with high and low throttle settings but low settings shut down the fuel delivery quicker as the engine comes up to idle rpm when it catches. I'm not sure that it's a big issue and the main thing that's important is that the engine catches with just a short burst of the starter. Cranking a diesel at low throttle probably is worse.

I'm pretty sure the Operator's Manual for my new Kubota says to set the throttle up to the 1/3 position for starting.

Starting procedures vary with the engine. I use partial throttle for starting after waiting for the preheat light to go off, in my particular case.

On a forage harvester that I used to have that had a Detroit Diesel engine, the cold weather start involved turning over the engine with the fuel OFF to warm up the cylinders and then turning on the injection pump to start the engine. They suggested cranking the engine without fuel for twenty seconds or so. Most procedures are much easier than this. ....

I have a JD 650 which is a Yanmar. Manual states half throttle for summer, full throttle for winter. Return throttle to 1500 rpm after starting and allow to warm up for approx. 5 min. ....
