I just purchased a used BX1800 (1 year old). Yesterday was my first chance to play with it and it seems to me that the power steering needs to be adjusted. When steering the tractor, there seems to be a lot of play in the steering wheel. I noticed when I was driving it down the road, the tractor was syaying back and forth and I had a hard time trying to keep it on line.
Is this normal and is there some place to make adjustments.
Any help would be most appriciated.
Thanks

I would check some mechanical things first, like the tie rods and the lug bolts. ....

Yes, checking things is good. The drag link fell completely off the Pitman arm on my used tractor the second day I had it. Now that was some loose steering. I drove back to the shed holding the drag link on the Pitman arm with the toe of my boot.
Somebody probably didn't know how to tighten a steering knuckle joint and didn't use a cotter key either. I put a bind on the drag link so I could torque the joint to spec--without a bind, the ball in the joint just spins around and the joint never tightens
There still was a lot of play in the steering wheel after I put the steering back together and the rest of the steering links were OK. There is a sector play adjustment on most steering sectors but that only takes play out of the sector itself. The links were OK so I went on to the sector. My tractor has PS and the owner's manual procedure threw me a curve. It didn't say the tractor has to be running to adjust the play for a tractor with PS. However, the procedure in the repair manual does say the tractor has to be running. Anyway, there's likely to be a sector adjustment that can take some of the play out of the steering if nothing in the system needs repair, and procedures for doing it properly would be in a manual. I would ask a dealer service manager if the tractor needs to be running if the procedure doesn't mention it.

Thanks for your info. I would like to see if I can fix it since it does seem that the steering should be tighter. ....
