I just purchased a 790 John Deere. I'm going to have to purchase a bushog for it. I'm going to cut about 11 acres.
Am I right to assume I should be looking at a five footer?
I'm looking at any feedback I can get.

It really depends on what's being cut and how fast you want to go.

I don't have a rotary cutter, but I believe that a 5' light-duty is about right for my 24 pto hp tractor. Light-duty cutters are usually rated for up to 1" material. Most cutter manufacturers have web sites where recommended HP for their different models and duty grades can be found. The recommendations tend to be a bit conservative but are good guides. For my 1710, I think I get something smaller than 5' even if it didn’t cover my wheel tracks if I had brush with saplings to cut.

The 1710 might have enough hp for to run a mower larger than 5' if only short grass is cut. However, I'd keep in mind that larger cutters are heavier, less maneuverable and harder on pto clutches. I'd probably stick with 5'.

Norm, Tom's right you shouldn't put anything larger than a 5' on a 790. I have a 4700 and run a JD MX6 and don't like cutting anything larger than 1" with it. It's rated as a medium duty and can cut 2" but gives it a-hell of a thrashing doing it.

Can I suggest getting the deflector chains on your cutter. They are an option on some cutters. The deflector strips will help but the chains are better IMHO. I had a friend killed a few years back by something thrown from a cutter (from 75 yards away) A little extra safety never hurts ....

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I'm new to the larger tractors. I can't figure out the abbreviations "IMHO". Also
I assume the deflector chains go on the bottom sides of the bushhog?
I figured out "FEL". Does that graduate me to farm school 1st grade?

Yes the chains would hang like a fringe around the bottom edge of the cutter body. As to the anachronisms, some are tractor lingo and some are computer shorthand. Look under faq (there's another one!) on the header for some of the shorthand lingo. ....
