I'll soon be purchasing a new TC45 or TC45D, but I'm kind of miffed about one point. To be exact, I would prefer the gear-driven TC45, but find it hard to swallow that I can't special order the tilt steering, wrap-around headlights, and rubber floor mat options that are standard on the hydro-driven TC45D. Seems to me it would be beneficial to NH sales to make as many of these kinds of simple and manufacturably-transferrable options available to both tractor models. Having models differ based on major features like HST vs. gears or supersteer vs. no supersteer is right, but not allowing simple creature comfort options to cross over between models is wrong, or another way to put it (which will hopefully reach NH company ears if not already), bad business. When one spends well over $20K for a new rig, one expects the privilege of capitalizing on these kinds of creature comforts, especially given the fact that NH has obviously already paid so much good design attention to what I have found to be the best laid-out compact on the market. I don't want to buy now if in fact this policy mistake has already been brought to NH's attention and corrected for the upcoming Boomer model year.. At the least, has anyone out there heard what new options or upgrades will be available on next year's Boomers? Even this late in the season, trying to extract this kind of information out of a dealer is like trying to get rid of trapped gas: you know it's in there, but you just can't shake it out. (Any analogy is unintentional, unless you're a dealer and won't tell, in which case it may be coincidental!!!)

You bring up a very valid point, and one of my pet peeves about the TC line. There is no info currently available from NH that indicates this rather foolish marketing strategy (or lack thereof) will be corrected soon. Gear-drive customers will continue to be deprived of the best features of the Boomers. ....

Very much like the auto makers. They package the best stuff with high end packages to make you spend more overall. I recently purchased a new truck and the intermitten wipers were packaged with power windows and locks. Such an item should be standard on any vehicle (the ash tray is and I don't smoke). It's a money game. ....

Whether this is a foolish marketing strategy or not depends on how many buyers move up to the D model to get the extra creature comforts. They have positioned the shuttle tractors as the economy model and it may be intentional to try to upsell to the D model where there is a higher selling price and margin. While I was leaning toward the hydro anyway, after looking at the shuttle units, my mind was definitely made up. I wanted the creature comforts so their strategy may have worked on me at least. Has anyone sent an email to NH to ask them? Would be interesting to hear their response. ....

Michigander, how are things in my old home state? I left Michigan 22 years ago for the Sawtooth Mountains here in Idaho, but still love to go back to family, the Great Lakes, and Wallin (Benzie County) every so often. I will email my concern to NH. Realistically, nothing will make a potential change faster than NH finding out that potential customers (I'm not the only) are concerned about these kinds of little things and talking with each other over the World Wide Web. Maybe I'm right, but maybe I'm wrong and can't see the big corporate picture. But INTERNET plus CUSTOMER PERCEPTIONS divided by ALMIGHTY DOLLAR will sort this out over time, perhaps not in enough time for my tractor purchase (so here's my gift to future NH compact buyers). Foolish strategy? How more foolish would it be for NH to lose even a small amount of what must be a significant sales percentage (gear compacts), else why would they even offer gear tractors? Fact is, they do sell more hydros with all the options for lots of good reasons. Fact also is, there are lots of things gear tractors can do better than hydros, else they (gears) would have disappeared 15 or 20 or whatever years ago when hydros came on. Point is, how many extra hydro units does NH have to sell in order to make up one lost customer who didn't give NH 20,000 plus dollars because they couldn't get the simple creature comforts they wanted on their new gear tractor? Answer: Lots of hydro units, which translated means goodbye to profit margin with the existing strategy. Seems to me if NH is going to keep selling gear compacts, then sell them right! New Holland keeps the customer. And bottom line (literally): The customer is still paying NH for the options! ....

Bob, Things are great here is SW Michigan. Lots of snow but that's not all bad.
As far as the NH strategy, I didn't mean to imply that I agree with it either. Just guessing on what it might be. You would certainly think they would have a deluxe model with either transmission option. Seems the logical method to attract the most buyers but I'm sure Marketing Guru thinks they have us all figured out and decided to limit the choices. If I were going to buy a shuttle transmission unit it probably would not have been a NH because I did want a stripped down unit. I looked very closely at the Kioti DK45 with a shuttle. Very nice unit for the money. Under $20K with FEL. I am surprised they have not become more popular. Has any one else looked at them? ....

Michigander, I looked at your post under Kioti thread, found it interesting. I'll look into Kioti DK45. But I'm hesitant due to lack of Kioti talk in my area, and my profession takes me to scores of farms/farmers. That in itself, however, can be overlooked if the tractor is new to the scene and promises a reliable service network. I came into the compact market closed-minded, had to have a Deere. My mind got opened up in a hurry after I found I could almost rip the fender off a 4600 just by getting on it. Then found the loader joystick crammed into my average-sized thigh due to poor location, presumably because JD couldn't locate the joystick on the weak fender (the "bad design" domino effect). Then all the bad JD compact posts (MFWD scuffing, etc). My JD dealer is a great softball friend, but I couldn't pull the $26K trigger for all these JD mistakes. Too bad for us both. Would take a new 4000-Ten series with these mistakes fixed to get me back to a JD compact (love bigger JDs, no problem!). Kubotas, great tractors, my eyes just can't take the color. Suppose I could paint it. New Hollands, after sitting on a TC in protest to the JD 4600, fell in love. But find the "option discrimination" against gear-drive TC's distasteful. Working on that. No perfect tractor on the market, personal preferences differ. But sure wish they (NH and the rest) would realize that a good bunch of us "Boomers" can darn well afford any compact options they can throw at us, gear drive or otherwise, if they'd give us the buying opportunity. ....

After contacting NH in early January with the TC(45) "option discrimination" complaint addressed above, they contacted me promptly and informed me the issue was on its way up the corporate ladder. To date, (Feb. 11, 2001) not a word has come down from NH as they had promised. ....
