I am planning on going all out with wood heat thsi winter and am looking for genius ideas for storing and moving stacks of firrewood around. Preferably using my tractor with loader to do most of the work.

if efficiency is your goal, getting rid of wasted motion is key.
I haul my firewood trees/bolts right to my storage area, cut them up right there, split them on my tractor mounted DR two way splitter, throw them on a pile under my drying roof, and leave them in a non stacked pile.
The key is to only handle each piece once. ....

There’s 2 options, maybe a 3rd technically.

First, you can carry it with the FEL, you have better visibility, range of motion and unfortunately that comes at reduced capacity in most cases.

Secondly you can use forks (as mentioned) or a dedicated 3pth ‘carry-all’ box. This gives you added weight capacity, better traction and in tight quarters, better maneuverability.

Technically the third way would be to employ both methods at the same time.

I usually a utility box with a hydraulic toplink for the majority of my firewood gathering but mostly because I do so at my farm and cottage where I only have a mid-sized 2WD utility tractor available. The hydraulic toplink allows me tilt the box in towards the tractor to increase carrying capacity and when extended to mostly dump the box.

Best of luck.

Hi,
here is my method:
After cutting, I split in the field or in my processing zone. As I split, I throw each piece onto a 6 foot wide pallet with a back stop that is about 3 feet high and small sides to prevent the logs from falling off. Once that is somewhat filled (depends on the wood I am splitting) I lift that up with my FEL that has forks clamped onto the bucket. I drive that over to my storage shed and stack it.

The next step of efficiency is carts designed for easy movement for burning:
I have six wooden carts I built with 5" swivel casters. Each cart is 5' wide X 4' high X 2' deep (i burn 20" logs). The cart is surrounded by 1/4" plywood with a V cut into one broad side, this makes loading and unloading easy. I have it built on 2x6's with 2x4 braces for the floor. I use as much scrap lumber as I can. Also the floor should be as good/solid as possible to avoid crumbs falling out.

I have notches cut in the 2x6's so i can pick it up off my deck with the forks and it won't slide left or right. I then drive to the shed, load up cart then drive it back to my deck, place it and then roll it into my covered porch where it sits until I need to pull from it.
Typically five carts are filled with split wood and one is filled with smaller kindling and whole logs that I can pick up with one hand approx 7" dia.

I burn 24/7, those 5 carts last about a month, depending on the wood, weather and my schedule.

Hope that helps.

Can we post pix here? I can't remember...

I have a 3-pt hitch basket carrier that dumps. I bought it at Tractor Supply several years ago for around $400 but I don't see that they carry this item anymore. However, it looks like the one pictured, so if you search the internet for a 3-pt hitch carrier, I'm sure you will find one. This carrier is ideal because it can be lowered to the ground for loading, holds quite a bit of firewood and dumps - very maneuverable in the woods and much better than a trailer.

Used to be all manual labor Younger now I try to work smarter no bending lifting etc.

I do about 7 std cord a year burn about 5 give or take. Buy logs from logger delivered to pile. Use grapple to pick log cut 20" blocks waist high pile blocks up with grapple. Use the grapple at my pace to load on wagon that's waist high, stack blocks for a full load. Pull up by splitter waist high. Here's where I do 3 different methods. 1 with dump trailer with tailgate at 45 degree raise box part way pick split wood off tail gate. 2. Small wagon/trailer/cart not bad and carries 1-2 face cord. 3. this year trying the pallett on forks seems some what easier but more trips = slower pace. No bending and can lift pallett to stack top layers in shed at 10' high.

Look under Harv's Stuff youtube for wood video, shows most of process ....

That's it That's just a small pile of culled wood from neighbor. I work off a much larger pile for my own use here. Similiar to pile at end of video. I'm working on a new video of complete process. But that's essentially the way I do it. ....

Well I hae got 4 cords of split firewood. I used my Tractor loader to move it from the dump pile to the stack location.

I cannot use forks in the winter as I have a front snowblower so the more efficeint methods will not work that require a loader.

I stage the wood outside first then keep a half cord in the garage so it dires more before I put it in the stove. ....

So what did you finally do? We use the old 250 Gallon TOTES that farm chemicals come in. just throw the wood in and move it with forks.
Hope you have access to free totes. There are thousands out there on big farms. ....

As I mentioned in my prior post I used the loader to build dense stack of firewood about 75 feet from my garage about 11 by 12 by 5 feet high. I also used the loader bucket to stacke a row of firewood in my garage 16 x 5 feet high, and another 8 x 5 on my cocvered porch. By the stove I used a rack made of 2x4 s to store another stack 4 x 4 feet high.

To get the wood into the house I used a handtruck with rectangular garbage pail strapped to it to haul the wood the last stretch up 5 steps on the deck and into the house next to the stove.

About the best I could do. I really like the totes but given my layout and my need for snow removal set up it did not work for me this year. ....
