this is the second time in 330 hours I have to have the drive axle replaced on my 4100 410, has anyone else had this problem, it is an expensive repair dealer tells me it is due to leaving it in four wheel drive and the front axle is a different ratio then the rear, i think it is just a lemon or poor repair work the first time 50 hours ago

Are you running it in four wheel drive on solid surfaces like pavement? If so it binds the drive systems as the ratios are different. Think you will find most if not all four wheel drive tractors have slightly different ratios between the two axles with the front one's turning slightly faster. ....

The distance you drive in 4wd will result in what's called drive line "Wind UP' whether you drive 150ft. or ten ft., it is till happening. The front wheels are designed to pull somewhere between 2-4% faster on the tire tread surface than the rears, this helps you steer better when running in soft ground. They tend to "Lead" the rear wheels and make a track for the rears to follow, otherwise the tractor would wander when you wanted it to go straight.
OK, now why you are breaking the axle, I'm not sure. Are you carrying a loader bucket with a full load of dirt or snow and at the same time having a ballast box or something heavy on the three point for traction? That situation could while in 4 wd. on a cement or blacktop surface tend to "Glue" the tires to the road restricting any slippage to compensate for the drive line wind up.
I don't know anyone who owns a 4100, but surely someone here on the board does who could share some info with you.

I have a JD 4100 with some 450 hours on it and have not had any trouble with the front axle. I take it that you have verified the tire sizes you are running front and rear are correct.
I have very little noticeable wind up while operating other than during sharp turns. Do you feel a lot of wind up and get wheel hops while turning?
One other thought is the 4100 has a locking mechanism for locking the rear axles together, is it possible that it has locked and won't release?

tires are still original. i have not noticed any wind up or wheel hops.
why would the possy tract affect the drive train to the front wheels? the axle keeps twisting off at the rear connection ....

It would seem to me that a locked rear axle would put extra stress on the drive line in general and the front axle being the weaker component would be the first to fail. ....

Had a 4100 and now have a 4115 (same basic critter) and NO issues with the axles, BUT.... I never run 4wd on pavement unless said pavement is covered with snow. ....
