We have had some pretty heavy snowfalls here in the last couple weeks.
While I was plowing a parking lot last week, I noticed oil spraying from the plow hydraulics.
I figured out that it was just a loose fitting, and it took about 3-4 quarts to bring the oil level back into the sight glass.
Since then the 3 point hitch has hiccups. About every 20-30 seconds it will drop about 1/2 inch and then jump back up. It makes the whole tractor shake.
Not even sure at this point that it is related to the first problem....... I have cycled the hitch up and down several dozen times thinking it might be purging air but it does not appear to have helped.
Any thoughts????

DR;
Does this happen only when the hitch is fully raised or at any position?
I had this happen with a regular farm tractor and it seems like it was related to an adustment on the position lever trying to make the hitch raise too high. ....

Hey Frank..... Merry Christmas!
The position seems to make no difference, except of course, the full down position where it just sits there.
Another thing I noticed this A.M., the hitch and counterweight drifted all the way down to the ground overnight. It raised all the way back up as soon as I started the engine.
It has always held position in the past..... even for weeks at a time. ....

DR;
A Merry Chrisrtmas in return.
I have a Tech. manual for the 4XXX series but somehow since last spring it just isn't here. I'm sure the trouble shooting section would have some advice. Maybe someone else here has one that can help you out.
I'm not going to rush out to buy another one just yet, it has to be somewhere. ....

Mark,
To me it sounds like one of two (the most likely) possibles;
1) (and IMHO the most likely) air as you suspect, but not purging for some reason,
2) a bad seal which is allowing fluid to seep past it.
I doubt however that a 3pth seal would go because of a minor problem in the front end. Doesn't make any sense.
I do know however that air trapped in some areas, like the 3pth, can be a real PITA to get rid of because of the relatively low flow and lack of 2 way pressure.
Try letting the machine sit for a while (like overnight) and then with the 3pth all the way down, start the machine, then very slowly lift it up. It could just be that the oil is so frothy that it's sucking up more air each time you cycle it instead of purging it.
BTW, I wouldn't be too concerned about the drift at this moment, I've seen before where air under pressure went past the seals, but the oil couldn't. The air can pass through narrower openings than the oil can.
Best of luck.
Oh, and Merry Christmas from snowy Cannuckistan! ;) ....

Thanks Murf. I'll let it rest overnight. Merry Christmas.
Frank.... Duh.... I've got the shop manual on CD and forgot I had it. There is an adjustment that I can try if Murf's advice doesn't do the trick.
Thanks guys.
