Question about a 2000 JD 4100

My buddy has a JD4100 that he has a hard time starting in the winter. I mentioned that my Kubota MX5000 had glow plugs he told me he didn't think his tractor did. His owners mannual does not say anything about them. Does his tractor use/have them?

I'm not really familiar with the little JD tractors but I can't believe any 'modern' CUT or SCUT wouldn't have some form of starting aid.

Having said that though, having glow plugs, and having WORKING glow plugs are two VERY different stories!!

I realy don't think they had glow plugs but it li9kely has a manifold heater, check the owners manual for sure. If it has a manifold heater DO NO USE ETHIER. Frank ....

I had one of those.

It does have glow plugs. You are supposed to hold the key in the "on" position until you hear a "click" ... usually about 5 seconds..... then engage the starter.

Murf.... my more modern 4115 has no starting aids. The 2000 4100 has direct injection and glow plugs. The 2003 4115 has indirect injection and just starts when you turn the key. ....

Huh, today wasn't a loss, I learned something!! ;)

I didn't realize that they still made some tractors without some form of starting aid. I guess the Yanmar engines are more Asian than I thought, I figured they'd at least have a manifold heating system.

I guess it would be pretty easy to add one in, I did on the Perkins in my big TLB, it only took about an hour.

I'm not sure on your friends, but my 4210 which replaced the 4100 series does have glow plugs. To engage them you turn the key to the on (not start) position and then push the ignition in
deeper as if putting the key deeper in the hole. Hold for
a few seconds and then start. Though I rarely need it, it is there.

Yep. Just turn the key to the "run" position and wait for a few moments. In summer, I only let the glow plugs go for 5 seconds or so. In winter I let it go longer, maybe 15 to 20 seconds. If it's below around 15 degrees or so I'll have usually plugged in the block heater too. So far, hasn't let me down. At least as far as starting goes. :(

I used a very similar method back in the mid 80's with my 1979 VW diesel rabbit! ....
