I have a 285 series Bush Hog that I use with an L3710 Kubota. I am not able to get the PTO Shaft of the Bush Hog off the tractor. I can slide the collar that is supposed to release the bearings back and forth easily, but apparently the 3 ball bearings are not releasing. I have put WD40, grease and everything else on them to free them, but it seems more like a mechanical problem. I know the bearings are not rusted because I kept them well lubricated. Does anyone have any idea how I can get them to release.

You might want to tap the shaft forward or backward slightly as the balls may be jammed against the groove in the shaft. Might want to use a rubber mallet and hammer the side of the coupler to jar the balls loose too. ....

I think EW is on the right track. If there is any pressure against the locking mechanism it will hold them from releasing sometimes. I have one PTO shaft that is like that, you have to ease it forward a little , THEN turn the collar, then pull the shaft off.
If you have lubed them up good then I would suspect either the above or some bit of debris got in there and is sticking it in place.
Maybe if you have access to an air chisel you could use a blunt tip to vibrate the shaft some and see if that works it loose.
Best of luck. ....

Jerry, there are least two different ends, one has a single pin you push and on some of those if you push it too far it will not release. The one it seems you have with a ring that you pull back will not pull back fully if as Murf said you have debris in it. You may find it good to disconnect the cutter and pull the shaft apart for working room.
You said you know the balls are not stuck, how about the pto shaft itself on the tractor's shaft? kt ....

Thanks for responding. Actually, I know the balls are stuck. I had some trouble putting getting it to go on so I checked the balls and even though they were clean and not rusty they weren't being released by moving the collar. After I pushed for a while it finally went on. The collar is moving fully back and forth so it's not bound.
Since I can't get it off I know it's having the same problem with the balls not releasing. I'll try the suggestions in the responses. Thanks. ....

Jerry, bear in mind also that if these things were assembled in the first place, they can be DISassembled now.
Of course, it would have been easier to do before the shaft was put on the machine, but likely not impossible.
Usually if you peel the rubber cover back there is a few set screws or something like that holding the collar in place, with the collar out of the way the balls can be either moved by hand or taken out completely.
Just be aware that when you remove the collar the ball bearings are likely to go everywhere, it would pay to do such over a large rag or old towel or something to make finding all the little bits easier.
Best of luck. ....

Also remember that when you finally get it loose and pops off unexpectedly, the telescopic shaft can pinch your hand where the shaft fits inside the tube. My farmer relative got 14 stitches when it pinched him a few weeks ago. I always wear leather gloves. ....

I had a similar problem. My Woods mower driveline was stuck on the PTO shaft for three weeks. No amount of oil or twisting would loosen it. Then I went out yesterday and reattached the quick hitch and lifted the mower until the driveline and and PTO seemed horizontal. This time when I pulled back the collar the driveline slid right off. My lesson is that alignment is crucial. Now it's First off, and Last on for the PTO connection. ....
