Just after I renewed my subscription here I got a email from Paypal showing that the transaction took place. Then I got another email from the what appears to be the same sender asking me to activate my paypal account by clicking on the link and entering my password. Now I'm no fool so I didn't. The Email even had a side bar saying Paypal would never ask for my password in an email! It's just so hard to know where these are coming from, everything looks right. New subscribers should "BEWARE"
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Note from Tractorpoint:
Paypal allows you to pay TP for membership by either joining Paypal for using your credit card without joining Paypal. This was probably a valid membership note from Paypal. If you re sketical never click on a link in a suspicious email. Goto the paypal.com site by putting that address in yourself, and visit the site with your id and password.
Since Paypal is the largest credit card processor on the internet and part of eBay, there are scamers who send mail out acting as if they are Paypal. Any of these activities are not related to the Tractorpoint site.

I wrote Paypal and sent them the email and they said they did not know the origin of the email asking for my password, so they couldn't do anything about it. I see this as no different than someone walking up to me on the street and trying to rob me of my credit card. If they don't get it the crime didn't happen? ....

"I wrote Paypal and sent them the email and they said they did not know the origin of the email asking for my password, so they couldn't do anything about it."
They may not know the origin of the e-mail but I think they have a responsibility to at least attempt to find out. If they don't have the resources for that then they should have someone else do it for them. I'm disappointed in their response to you. ....

I am sure Paypal is doing all they can do be sure it doesn't happen, as far as THEY being responsible, they are not and will only do it to ensure a good name for themselves.
Laws are what protect you and I from scam and if those laws are broken, it is up to Law Enforcement and not us. (sometimes)
In paypals issue there is copyright infringements when their logos are being used. If they can find out who, they can sue. I doubt they will find out who and som eof these operations are being run by Laptops and are very mobile and in other countries where OUR laws have zero affect. ....

You're absolutely correct Wingwiper. By "Responsibility" I mean PayPal has the responsibility to ensure that the right people (Enforcement) look into this and attempt to track down the origin of the e-mail to MIFarmin, not just say they don't know the origin of the e-mail and can't do anything about it; which is what MIFarmin said his response was. ....

If you get a notice from PayPal and it says "Dear PayPal user or customer" it is a scam. If it comes directly from PayPal they will say customer number .......,etc.
The notices sure look authentic don't they. I won't use PayPal any longer since they don't seem trust worthy in helping you out.
If you use any of that stuff and purchase with a credit card, get a card that has a $500.00 limit so they can't get you for say $10,000.00. Most credit card companies are understanding but it takes a while to get the charges revoked. ....

Justus,
I know what youmeant, I was running my mouth and giving an opinion. Without an IP address it is hard to say who is who and maybe they can go by the email addy but that doesn't always pan out any info either. I have 8 email accounts and I can change hosts at a drop of a hat and if I lived in Nigeria, you can't touch me.

I use a Debit card on an account I control the balance of. It is ALWAYS in a consumer's best interest to keep their Open To Buys low on Credit cards, for that Open to Buy is considered DEBT and can prevent you from getting a loan. Even if your balance is ZERO they look at your Open To Buy because very simply after you are approved for that Auto Loan you could go out and max your Credit cards and not be able to pay anyone back. Keep your OTBs as low as you can, you will have better chances getting loans approved and Credit people HAVE TO comply with your rquests, this also goes towards Dept Store accounts such as Best Buy, Circuit City etc, every Open To Buy held against your name is potential Debt and is condiered in loan giving. ....

Many people don't, I found out several years ago when I tried to refinance my home. Now I work close with Finance to get Car Loans on people and for many, it is thier debt to Income ratio that hurts them and Open To Buys are very much apart of it.
Being upside down is another and I am so sick of reading on the Internet about how car salsmen are trying to screw people. Damn, Joe bought a $30,000 truck, 6 months ago and wants to trade, he had no money down before, has no money down now, which means he financed his taxes and all DMV fees etc and Interest that he needed to pay. His truck is now worth $21,000 (prices are set by what the consumer is willing to pay and REBATES push prices of used down as well, a $7000 rebate on a NEW minvan will send the trade-in value down by te same amount) and he owes $29780, poor Joe, he is $8780 upside down, because he rather have debt pay debt and not use cash. Now that $8780 has to be buried in his next purchse and equates to be about $180 of his New payment. He is now going to pay Interest on it again and in 2 years when he grows tired of this vehicle he will be even further upside down and who will he blame? yup! the car salesman for doing what he insisted for him to do.

Wing,
You are right car salesmen are not looking out for you they are looking out for themselves. Some things don't change.
I believe they also get compensated for how much credit they put on you.
In your example the guy is buying a car beyond his means, but he still wants it, not uncommon, and also the best way to bankruptcy. The sales guy was just accomodating and encouraging the buyers stupidity.
I was working on a credit project for a client, and the critical things that they were interested in were:
-owned your own home or rented
-how long there
-how long at job
-income
If you have money, everybody wants to give you credit. I think the OTB is not relevant in that case. If you do not have assets the OTB is a real issue as you point out.

Paypal has already made it clear that they will not ask you thru an email what your Account info is. This email is a true scam for it starts off asking for your name, pasword and then further on for so-called purposes of verification it wants you to retype your Bank info and Credit card info. They have cut and paste the Paypal images etc to make their site look real authentic but it is a scam. Been aropund for about a year. M/C Visa and several others are also being used but Paypal is the most widely known one. ....

I am in Auto Sales and that simply is not true, Yes! you always have Pond Scum in every occupation.
Our Dealership does NOT force anything down anyone's throats. Yes! everyone knows that Dealerships get a Commission from the bank if they can get them a referral or a finance. No secret. Realators get it to as well as Tractor Dealerships and Big Box Stores etc. That is how Banks get other to gain business for them, it is NOT a scam.
I di dNOT say Car salemen are not looking out for you, We are. We want Repeat business, same as you and a Happy Customer will refer others to us, that is very Basic Marketing 101. I use to sell $2500 computers and I made 45% profit and no one complained, in the Electronic field, they expected prices to go down each year. Calculators that once sold for $500 are now Free. Computers that were once $5000 are now $799, but in the Car IIndustry if I make $300 Profit on a New Car, I am ripping the publiic off, If I try to convince the Customer to Buy a Service Contract to protect their investment, I am scamming them. Cars are complex now, Labor is expensive and people feel that the Dealer should warranty everything whether they decide to buy the Serivice Contract or not. Warranties by Manufacturers are for the most part for Workmanship and not against wearing out or abuse or lack of oil changes for 30,000 miles. Service Contracts can replace those Sensors, computers, tranmission etc etc that everyone screams about when they have to replace one. Man is NOT perfect and either is anything he makes. Yes! I get paid $15 if you Finance thru us, Yes! I get $20 if you buy a Service Contract. Not because we are screwing the consumer but because we get rewarded for informing the cnsumer of their choices. You have not seen a Happier face than the one of a person who bought a Mxi care Service Contract and when their Engine fried found out they owed NOTHING, Zero point poop. I bought one on my John Deere, not because I felt JD wasn't any good, but because I wanted piece of mind and not have to worry about any surprises. Sh-- happens. I have seen people try to get their Rims replaced under warranty because they have rusted, yeah! because the stones from the back roads have chipped away the protective coating and the SALT got at it. Warranties do not cover corrision or rust caused by outside chemicals or chips from stones, only for Manufacturer defects and workmanship.
My job is to make you happy and I have turned away numerous people becaue eit was stupid to bury them deeper. I have people who inssited and when I would not help them, kept going to dealers until one would. When the Credit Checks are runnned, everyone knows where they have been, and you finanly realize that with some consumers, they will not take No for an answr.
We just had a kid who had a GMC with the steering rear wheels, it was all decked out, not used for it was designed for, and he is $12000 upside down, We can not help him, and he left mad. I am sure this Dealership will get some good advertising from him and we don't sell GM products.
I care about my customers and I feel good when I can make it happen for them and not screw them. Most have common sense, theones with the BIG MOUTHs are usually the low-lifes who feel they are entitled to trde when they grow tired of it and feel the Dealers should be able to absorb their stupidity. I deal with it every single day. Then I read on the Internet how I am the one trying to scam the consumer.. The consumer scams themselves. Try paying with cash and if you don't have the cash, you can't afford it. NOPE! this is a credit society and everyone is ENTITLED to a NEW vehicle regardless. Trade in allowance is an inflated price only to make a cinsumer feel good, the ACV (actual Cash Price) or wholesale would shock people if they really knew what the dealer is getting for their cars at auctions. I have a lady I am workingwith her car is worth 5500 and I am showing her 6200 on the trade, I took 700 from the Profit and she is happy. I tried to explain the difference between ACV and Trade In Allowance. She didn't listen. People have NO CLUE what goes on behind the scenes to amke a deal happen. We pay $700 to a Ameria Credit to accpet some people. Where does that $700 come from? our profit. Yes! we are here to make money just as you are.
I do NOT scam nor do I lie. I am usre many do, I am not one and I do not work with any that do. ....

Its the buyers responsibility to watch out for their own best interests same for the seller.

Violent agreement? I am not being violent, I merely needed to state my position. tis all.
I disagreed with you when you said "You are right car salesmen are not looking out for you they are looking out for themselves. Some things don't change." Sorry I did not make that clearer. I wasn't saying that and I wouldn't and that is why I wrote what I did. I am a salesman and have Never lied to a customer nor have I have ever mislead, I have a better discription of what it is that I do and many like me, I EDUCATE AND THEN TRANSFER OWNERSHIP. Some folks you just can't talk any sense to. Those are the ones who want to blame someone for their poor judgements and it will be the Salesperson. It is really them. ....

Wingwiper - you are up there with another car salesman I know. He needs no pressure tactics because he has a very lucrative return clientel business going. He took good care of the clients the first time and they keep coming back.
Unfortunately, there are dealerships out there that are not that way. There are some dealerships that practice "sell no matter what the technique is." Those are the ones I get up and walk away from. Glad to know you are ah onest one. The honest guys are the ones that last in that industry.
It is a buyer beware situation out there and people will take advantage if the opportunity exists. I have a cousin with horrible credit and bad impulses to buy. She wanted a different car. But had no extra cash and horrible credit. So she went to one of those fly-by-night outfits and paid $20k for a car that was worth about $10k. Did I mention the 20% interest on the loan? She didn't do her homework. She wanted, but couldn't afford so she went the only alternative that would get her a different car. Someone has to take the risk of that loan and she paid for it.
Did she get screwed? Absolutely. Did she screw herself? Absolutely. Stupidity is no excuse.
I have other relatives that are like what was described. they need a new vehicle to keep up with the Joneses. So they are always in debt. They take deals that get them the new car without thinking ahead 2 years because in their mind, they will keep the vehicle for 4-5 years. They never do, but in their mind at that time, they will. I still drive my 6 year old F-250 with 140k miles that is paid for. One relative is currently looking for their 3rd or is it 4th new vehicle in that same period of time. ....

I forgot to mention that you can find such deals pretty much anywhere. They prey on people who have bad credit and won't take the steps to fix it. It's a high risk business so the return is high at the expense of the customer.
There is a company out there that sells new computers to people with bad credit or no credit. You want but can't get so you go to them. Could you get a better computer at a better deal elsewhere? Absolutely. But you screwed up your credit preventing you from doing it. So you pay extra to get what you want, but can't have.
Gotta have that 52" widescreen HDTV? Have any credit? No. Have the cash? No. No problem. Go to a rent to own type place. Could you get a better deal if you had good credit or cash? Absolutely. No patience will cause you to pay extra.
Remember - there is no law against stupidity. People think there should be but there isn't. If you act stupidly, you pay the price. ....

You are so very right.
Remember when Mistubishi had the Zero payments for 12 months, several years back? I had this guy come in and when we gave him his ACV he was very upset he said and I quote " My car HAS to be worth more than that I haven't made a payment on it yet?" I guess he thought if he bought with Zero payments for 12 months his car value was going to freeze while he drove it aorund Hell and back. What was the shocker to him was NOW you are going to start making payments on a vehicle that is NOT worth what you are making the payments on, after all you did drive for a year first.
Personnally, I'd Lease. You are never upside down and if you lease for 27 months, you are never out of warranty and your payments are much less than a buy and at the End, hand the keys over and drive a new one. Works, but so many people are against that word because they feel they wil never have the Title. Hell what wil a title do? the car is still going to depreciate, regardless if you have a title or not.
Hey Dennis, hope you didn't take my post wrong, I ain't mad, I had to give my 65 cents worth. ....

You what is sad? If people when they are ready to retire could add up all of the money that they had spent on Interest in their life, they would drop dead on the spot. Most will pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in JUST Interest, money that would have been able to be used to create a far better way of life for you. ....

Getting back to the original subject, I would forward the phishing email from "paypal" to your state's Attorney General's Office. Just because Paypal says they can't locate the originator of the email, doesn't mean it can't be done. Emails leave tracks in Cyberspace, but it can take a lot of effort to track them. Enough complains and someone will pick up the ball and run.
Your Attorney General's office may not be able to find the originator, but they can direct you to where to forward your complaint. ....

I've had a bad experience with Paypal as well. I sent a couple of payments to some organization using Paypal and never got a confirmation from the organization that the payments were received. When I send the payments by check I always get the confirmations. I was suspicious if Paypal didn't just keep my money. I should have double checked with the organization that I sent the money to, but got distracted with other things and the amount was rather trivial so I let it go, but now I try to send the checks instead of using Paypal. Maybe there's nothing to it, but I thought I'd let people know since we're all ganging up on Paypal here. ....
