Does anybody know where I can get plans to build a log splitter that my TC33 can run? Do you have to have rear hydro remotes or does it run off pto shaft? Is it cheaper to just buy one from Northern for $450

The cheapest is to buy a self contained and not tie up your tractor. ....

The CAD design company probably has plans. Looking in the archives for Bill's posts about their hoe he built probably would turn up a web site for the company.
A rear power-beyond outlet is needed. Splitter valves are specialized and most splitters have their own control valve. Without a rear outlet it's fairly common to run splitters etc. from a pto pump, which often provide better capacity than tractor hydraulics anyway.
I looked at splitters but concluded as Art mentioned that I'd rather have a stand-alone one. Used 3ph splitters tend to be plentiful and cheap around here and that likely would keep me from trying to make one. Never did get one because the costs of a replacement chimney for a wood stove and insurance company attitudes about stoves keeps us sticking with oil. ....

Tom's post is referring to cadplans.com . Yes, they do have plans for build-it-yourself splitters.
I believe that the units in Northern Hydraulics are powered by the tractor remotes. Figure on $250-$400 to buy the remotes for your TC33 and install them yourself. Even then, the relatively low output will operate the woodsplitter slowly. Some people say that woodsplitters run off of tractor hydraulics are OK; many say they are too slow. It would definitely operate slower than a self-powered unit. A couple of ideas: Build your own splitter and use absolute minimum ram size, which would increase speed; or instead of installing remotes on your tractor, set up a PTO driven hydraulic pump. Most pumps flow much more than our TC29/33 series tractors put out, and cost would be similar to buying the remotes.
Good luck,
Bill ....

Splitters are an implement which is often misunderstood and usually not operated as efficiently as they could be.
If the wood you're cutting is cut to a uniform(ish) length of say 16" then there is no good reason why a splitter should be made to operate on full cycles. Most commercial units have detents on the return side of the valve. This means that the cylinder, assuming it is a standard 24" size, will have to open the extra 6" before it stops, then close the extra 6" before it contacts wood and actually does any splitting. Mulitiplied out over even one cord of wood cut to 16" lengths that is a LOT of wasted motion, and therefore time. If the wood is cut to 12" then the waste goes up another 33% again.
It is best to have an 'adjustable-stop' type of control on the valve, a sprung auto-return is a VERY convenient add on too. This is a very easy upgrade to put on almost any splitter, as long as the valve is mounted on the mian beam that the splitter wedge rides and not remotely mounted on the engine or tank somewhere.
The increase in production is amazing by reducing wasted motion and automating the return cycle.
Best of luck. ....

A 6" spacer collar on the ram will accomplish the same thing. ....

An adjustable clamping collar will do the same thing, but with an adjustable-stop type all you need to do is loosen a wingnut, move the stopper and retighten the wing nut, no tools are required, you don't even have to remove your work gloves to do it.
Besides a spring costs about $0.50, an auto release vale costs about $100 extra, the convenience alone is worth it, even if the cost was the same.
Best of luck. ....
