I just purchased a used 231s massey tractor with only 735 hrswhich I thought was in real good shape but the tractor starts sputtering and grey smoking at about 1700 rpm, I live a ways from a dealer and thought someone may have had this trouble and could help me out.

Could be several things, possibly minor, but let me make a suggestion. You might be fairly inexperienced with diesels, and that's a nice model, so why don't you invest in a service manual for it. The engine troubleshooting section should address that symptom, but why don't you check everything. For instance, maybe it needs a new air filter. ....

First I am doing a lot of guessing here but should not hurt if wrong: Have you tried a good injector cleaner to see if it helped?
For questions to help narrow it down: is it with load on it doing this or not?
Have you run a few tanks of fuel through it to know it is good fuel?
Changed filters, any sign of water in the fuel?

....

I think I have found the problem with the 231s,I have been talking with some massey mechanics and they told me there was a thermal sensor on the bottom of the injection pump that adjusted the timing when the engine got to operating temp, that is when my tractor started sputtering and smoking ,so I unplugged it and the tractor ran perfect, but I would like to know what this sensor is for because the older model masseys do not have this on them and the people I have been talking to dont know. [maybe some cold climate deal] Thanks for any advice. ....
