I have a B7200 with a 4 foot snow /dirt blade. I can buy a 5' blade for about $500 but that seems a little pricey for an extra foot. I can buy blade wings that add 10" on either side that may fit my blade. Is there some good way to increase the width of my blade to 5' at least?
By the way- I have a 900 foot paved driveway with a 100' rise. Probably the worst winter driveway in Chester County Pa. This board recommended ROPS(got that) and chains (got them) and has been very helpful. Thank you for all your suggestions.

I think I would go with a blower. I owned a 7200 before my 7800 and used a 5 foot Woods blade to plow snow. It did ok but if I didn't keep it plowed it took forever and my driveway was only 200 feet long. I also found out that I couldn't pull the snow because it would pile up under the rear wheels and lift them off the ground. I could push it pretty good. With 900 feet of driveway, I would think either a bigger machine or snowblower.

I think the usefulness of a longer blade may depend on how wide of drive is cleared. For example I clear about 14' widths in most places. With a 5' blower that takes me three passes. The third pass is a skinny one in the centre. It would still take me three passes with a 6' blower and the third pass would be even skinnier. In addition, I'd probably run out of HP with a 6' blower in deep snow. If I had take two runs per pass I might be going up and down the drive more times than with a 5' blower that would clear deeper snows. ....

Are you handy with tools? I have seen entire three point 6' rear blade assemblies (King Kutter) retailing at big box tractor supplies for $249.00
Seems to me that you could pop that 6 foot blade off the mounts and "re-sole" your shorter blade. Just bolt it right over the top or trim your present blade back and use it as a weld-on bracket for the new blade. ....

I would make another suggestion along the lines of Mark's idea.
Any local scrap metal yard will likely have steel pipe scraps, if they had a peice of pipe with close to the right curvature they would likely cut you a strip out of it for a few bucks on top of the scrap value. This could just be bolted to or hung in front of the existing blade.
This way light snow could quickly be cleared away without affecting your ability to deal with the real heavy, wet, sticky stuff that only happens now and then.

In the process of learning, that means I made a mistake. We've gone to far before with the width of the blades to the point that when angling they push the front of the tractor to the side. I think 60" would be the most I think you an handle. ....

You have a good point about getting too wide, especially when your trying to push about 6-12" of wet snow. Most tractors are about 53-55" wide. A 60" wide blade works ok for a straight push but is a little narrow when tilting. I use a 72" wide blade but keep the tilt somewhat shallow. With heavy, wet snow falls it packs while being pushed and picks up stones from the driveway. You can see the snowpack several feet in front of the blade. I always keep the shoes projecting about 2" below the blade and attempt to keep the shoes just slightly off the surface. When you hit a large drift, the extra force tries to push down causing the shoes to dig and rip up the drive or grass. I then back drag with an FEL with the tip about 20 tilt. I have my drives set-up with large turn arounds and drag and push this snow into piles there. It is usually contaminated with stone. When it melts, it isn't on the lawn. Paved drives don't have that issue but I can't afford several 500' blacktops. ....
