Could someone please tell me how often you should change the oil in the gear box for the 60" mower deck on a Deere 430? How much do you put in and how do you check the level? What kind of oil do you put in?

Steve, most manufacturers will state in the Owners Manual (if you have one) how often and with what the fluid should be changed, however since it is usually stated in Operating Hours it is a nuisance to calculate. We (as commercial landscapers) always change all fluids, etc., in EVERYTHING during the late winter/early spring, past plowing season but before the equipment is needed. Use regular gear lube (80-90w gear oil) the same as you would put in the differential of a car or pickup. There will be two holes in the gearbox, one at the bottom (relative to it's normal position when installed on the machine) which is the drain plug, and another about 1/2 - 2/3 of the way up, fill with lube till the fluid reaches this point with the gearbox in the same 'operating position'. While you have the gearbox off the 'mower deck' (which is the easiest way to do it) be sure that the blades are sharp, straight, and most importantly, reasonably well balanced (no big pieces out of one end) an out-of-balance blade will cause excessive vibration which WILL result in damage to the equipment. Before re-assembling the unit coat all threads with a coat of 'anti-seize' silver paste, such as Lock-Tite 777) which will make life easier next spring or mid-season if you have a problem. Maintenance is the cheapest insurance you can get for your equipment, take it from someone who depends on his equipment for his livlihood (and that of 35+ employees). Best of luck. ....
