My 4115 has 24 gross/20 pto HP and is rated to run a 72 inch mid mount mower.
Go to the Deere web page and "build/accessorize" a new 790 and see what it offers as options. ....

I have a 72 inch rear discharge mower and have not had a problem.
I will add that a side discharge mower in high grass does require more hp how much more on a 84 is only a guess. ....

Not knowing how much aeria you have to mow or what quality of cut you're after brings up another factor. If you're doing "Front yard" mowing a narower deck will allways do a nicer job unless your lawn is dead flat, (ours is'nt). I've got an 84 in. rear mount on the 4410. I works great for roadside, road ditch, and waterway mowing where absolute quality is'nt important, but the front yard is out. Best of luck. Frank. ....

Hi .. I have a 790 and have a Bush Hog RDTH72 finishing mower .. it worked great and am actually looking to sell it (moved .. keeping tractor, no longer need the mower). Let me know if you're interested, in great shape .. paint is faded by cuts like a champ.
As for your real question of 72 vs 84, can't imagine it would be a huge difference or drain going with the bigger deck. Let us know what you go with! ....

Go for it.
I have the 72 rear discharge and there is lots o power left over.. You could possibly bog down if you weren’t using it as a finish mower.

I would go with the 72" mower. You could run the 84" but as already mentioned, run short on power in the heavy stuff. ....

Hey there .. hmm .. never really thought of a price. Believe I paid $1800+ for it new about 3 or 4 years ago .. and it's been in the garage for the last year. It's in great shape .. I'd say about 150 hours on it. Throw me a fair price and it's yours.
I'm in Northern Virginia .. not sure if that's a factor. Feel free to give me a buzz 540-454-1693 and we'll see if we can't work something out. ....

I have a 84" Woods finish mwr.,that I use a JD 1530 to pull it with. Although I have no weights of any kind on this tractor , the weight handling capability of your 790 is what I would think about. I hooked a local friends JD955 to my mwr. & had plenty of HP. to cut the grass (surprised me) ,but we tried to pick it up & was a bit too much for it ,without overloading it. When I go over steep inclines with 1530 , Mwr. seems to push the tractor & tractor weighs approx.4600#. Just some info, hope it helps,I kinda wish I had bought the 72" ,but at the time had a 3020 to use & couldn't. Good Luck ....
