I have a late 90s 4x2 gator and when I have the differential locked in the rear end sometimes makes a loud clicking sound. Adjusting the cable helps for a little while but then it will start clicking again. is my cable worn out or is it something in the rear end that needs replaced?

From the Operators Manual...
c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Driving at high speeds with the differential lock engaged may result in loss of steering control. Do not operate vehicle at speeds in excess of 16 km/h (10 mph) or attempt to turn when differential lock is engaged.
