My son decided to visit the pond in the back forty today. He came back and said "Dad someone has been throwing garbage in the spring above the pond". He dragged me down for a look.
The former owner had thrown some bricks and biulding material down in this area, which was overgrown with brambles. With the rains we have had some of the trash he and his sons had thrown had come to the surface.
My son (13) wanted the small tractor to remove the material. I told him I did not have time to day but he insisted.
During the excavation we uncovered 3 lead acid car and boat batteries. I can understand finding 30 or 40 year old batteries, but these were only removed maybe 3-5 years ago.
My son (12) knew the danger and insisted that we remove them from the water right away. These 20 year old boys and their engineer father did not understand the danger or the risk. A little lead in the water certainly dulls the senses.
I will be happy if we change to NiMH or Lithium.

I have yet to find any old batteries on my property but I do find a lot of old cans. They are oval shaped in the top view and had pull tab lids (I find those too). Someone told me that these were fuel oil cans. They would only hold about two quarts. I can'nt dig a hole without finding one. My neighbor hired out a contractor to grade his lot. The contractor found an old underground tank. Somehow the EPA got involved and it took nine months and $10,000 to get rid of the old tank which contained fuel oil. The moral here is "don't dig any holes". ....

There's a whole lot of bush across the highway from us. Of course, the place where stuff was dumped is along a creek bank. Cripes, throwing stuff in a pile in the bush is still just as out of sight as throwing it in the creek. Us 'bushies' aren't the only guilty ones. One of our township dumps is having its operating permit cancelled. The township took over the dump from a provincial (state) natural resources department. Of course, a creek flows right through the damp (nka landfill), which is the reason the dump will close, but I suppose it could be converted to a transfer station. I just don't know why people just seem to have to throw trash near water. Sometimes it seems like it’s actually more trouble than just piling it out of sight.
We were lucky to find 400-gallons of used engine/hydraulic oil courtesy of a former owner before it leaked and contaminated the ground. It took some trouble to find a waste oil service would take oil from a property owner in the middle of the bush. Sample testing and pumping ran about $400, and we figured it was worth every cent to get rid of the problem. As I understand, if the oil would have been PCB contaminated, $10,000 would have seemed a bargain.
As near as I can figure, at least two people have purchased a motel/service centre property in a neighbouring township and simply walked away after a few months. The property has a large pile of old creosoted railroad ties. I believe the township has said the ties have to be removed but there is no place that will accept them. I don’t think I would ever make an offer to purchase rural property without it being conditional on an environmental inspection.
