I have a 214 lawn and garden tractor with the belt driven varialble speed. I have taken it to the local dealer but he says its so old that no one knows how to work on it.
The faster speed selections don't work and in third gear in slower speeds it doesn't want to pull. Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks

I think my FIL has messed with those. The belt may not have enough tension on it to properly drive it in the higher gears. Beyond that, I'd be at a loss to recomend any other action at this time. ....

Wasn't it a JD 212 or 214 that was in a commercial where it showed a Young man and then a Married man and then him as a Grandpa and then the announcer says something like " John Deere will most likely be running long after you aren't"
Hell, my kids don't know who Ringo Starr is or never heard of Patcy Cline or when Buck died they go "who the Hell was Buck Owens?"
Young mechanics. oh well.
I would suggest to tkae the body off, should be two bolts under the seat and then two up front by the foot rests and inspect it for yourself. alot easier working from the top than from the bottom. ....

I have a 112 which is the same system.
First thing is the 2 drive belts, older models have fits with any wear in the belt. Put on new belts.
Second check the variable speed sheave, will the idler in the center slide back and forth easy?
Third check the spring tension on the variable sheave, it should be real taunt.
Mine is 37 this year I've had it for 22 years. The sheave is worn out on mine and is locked into the high range by lever and it runs in the low range side. If I move the lever back the tractor will not move unless I pull back on the clutch pedal with my heel.
It's worn out but still works ok for trimming. Good Luck ....

Harvey, You are right in suggesting new belts and checking the variable sheave. I might add that if the center sheave on the variable pulley does not move freely, to try and work it back and forth by hand while spraying penetrating oil on it. That usually frees it up pretty well, but be sure to clean all oil from sides of sheaves before reinstalling belts. Also check for excess play in sheave. The bushing in there sometimes wears out. This allows the sheave to get "cocked" and it wont slide properly. my old 1963 110 was still working great when I sold it. Only needed lubing the sheave about once every 2 or 3 seasons. ....
