4410 will not start

need help, jb 4410 will not start unless i jump it off.
new battery, belt tight. once it is started it runs fine, but the rpm gauge doesnt work.

You don't mention if the battery will try to or will turn the engine over.

Could the new battery be bad? Could there be a fuse for the alternator and RPM guage that is blown? After you first crank it, can you switch it off and then will it start from it's own battery or must you jump it again? Has the battery been fully charged or has the tractor been run long enough to full charge the new battery? Have you checked the cables for good connection to the battery? (I have done this) Is the battery connected properly? If this engine has glow plugs are they working? ....

Sure does sound like you have an improperly grounded or corroded ground connection somewhere in the system. Check all of your ground wire connections. There are several through out the machine. ....

chief, i thought i had checked all of the grounds, but i'll look again. i ran it for about a hour then i shut it down. then it just clicks. i pulled the starter (it was a bitch)
and hooked it up to see if it would engage it did. after that i hooked it back up and it tried to turn over then it just clicked. ....
