I saw an advertisement for a DeWalt "Mobilelock" GPS system for contruction equipment, trailers, etc. It uses GPS, cellular technology and the Web to track your property.

Anyone used this or know anything about it? I couldn't find anything about pricing, etc.

Don't know, but you could Google "antitheft tracking devices," or contact LoJack about using their product for machinery, or ask DeWalt.

If you have theft insurance, your insurer may have recommendations or offer a discount. ....

EW there are lots of them out there. We looked at Qualcom and ended up at Itrak. We currently use about 300 devices and they have an intial cost plus monthly charges. I have 20 devices here.

They have helped our bottom line. Just keeping track of the trucks daily activities more than pays for it. The mobile equipment is another issue. If it's not where you left it the night before and it takes hours or days to locate, plus fix, how much is the production lost time worth?

Shop around. We looked at straight satelite systems and settled for GPS plus celluar. We may up grade our truck fleet with the engine connection to monitor idle and operating telemerty.

Auer, I went to the DeWalt site and they requested an "info request" which I filled out.

Harvey, those 20 you have are you offering them for sale?

I'm just a one-man-show. I need coverage for my tool trailer and a few pieces of equipment that are left on job sites.

The LoJack or LoJoke as I call it, doesn't have the ability to monitor and send a distress signal; it is only activated by the user when he finds something is stolen. And even then, it requires local law enforcement to have special equipment supplied by LoJack. Not all areas are covered is the bottom line. And they don't always work inside a building or tractor/trailer on it's "one-way" trip down south. ....

Were pretty lucky that way, we are allowed to have both our own yard, usually protected by dogs, and a fence and electronics at our jobs.

Even then most of it is sort of moot since the jobs are not exactly visible from anywhere the road or anywhere the public can venture.

We do still have some losses, so far though we've never really been stung ourselves, it was almost always locally rented equipment that was taken.

In our own yard you'd need a helicopter and a pretty big set of.......to get anywhere near our stuff. The front gate is a few hundred feet from the equipment compound and getting past it (even on foot) both turns on lights, and rings an alarm bell that alerts our 4 legged security systems to the presence. The dogs also have access to the shop and office on their own.

Best of luck. ....

EW None for sale all installed. The best one is in the mechanics truck. Try keeping track of one of those guys.

The systems have a thing called "GEO FENCING" You set a area and if the equipment is moved from that area a message goes out to/by phone, email, to law or a private person or you depending what arrangements you have made with the provider.

The systems are pretty cool to use.

I would think based on previous treads concerning security on/at job sites this would work on your large tool boxes and storage containers.

The FEDS are working on a plan to have permenant mounted devices on all tanker type trucks. These will message if they are tampered with in anyway or moved etc.

So the technology is there already for your small stuff. ....
