On June 3 I had some pains in my abdomen, which resulted in my getting an emergency laparoscopic apendectomy the next day. I was operated on at 9PM and was released the next morning at 11:30AM.

I was was one happy guy that all went so well. The recovery was rapid.

The one thing though that amazed me is that the Hospital sent me an "information Only" summary of my charges which totaled $13,000.00 for the operation.

Then my insurance company sends me a payment notification showing that the hospital submitted $11,800.00 in charges and that they were able to negotiate with the hospital to get them to accept $1,300 for my operation a savings of $10,300 because of my coverage.

This 1) made me happy because my out of pocket was only $137
2) made me outraged that if I did not have the insurance I would have been billed $13,000 for the same service. This sure makes things tough for people who don't have coverage, it sure seems unfair to charge someone 10 times what another person is charged.

Glad to here you did not wait for the price before hand.

I have seen it on my medical bills also, I guess it is the latest medical scam. It reminds me of buying something in Mexico. They throw out some outrageous price and then negotiate to a reasonable price. Soon it will be as difficult to find an honest doctor as a lawyer.

As they say absolute power corrupts absolutely.

My son broke his arm last year, cracked the end of the bone, nothing to set. Cost $800 for a cast and 5 mins work.
