I've read posts asking where to find a decent book on compact tractor usageas well as reviews of all the existing ones (of which I know) saying they'reuseless.I figure among all the members of the compact tractor mailing lists andmessage boards there must be enough expertise to write the definitive bookon using the modern compact diesel tractor, if only the right informationcan be put together. Why not do it? I have experience in writing manuals, and I think a book onthis topic would be eminently publishable. We could either split royaltiesamong contributors or pool them to fund a new or existing compact tractorinternetworking site or some other project. My interest is purely selfish - I need to learn how to get the most out ofmy tractor. If I get involved in actively picking the brains of experts anddistilling their knowledge into a readable and accessible form then I'lllearn what I need to know along the way. I suppose it might be neat to makeenough money to pay for an implement or two, but that's not really the goal. What I have in mind is a small section on choosing and purchasing a tractor, sections on general operation (including using and adjusting the 3-pt.hitch), maintenance, and safety, sections on each of the major implementsthemselves (names, major brands, features, uses, adjustment, warnings, etc.), and sections on major tasks (mowing, moving snow, agriculture, landscaping, forestry, etc.). The level of detail and discussion would besignificant. For example, different ways of preparing a seedbed or mowing ameadow would be listed step-by-step with comparison and contrast of benefitsand limitations. This could probably be done in 6-12 months by a motivated small group orlonger by a larger, less dedicated group. I'd be interested in hearing fromanyone interested.

I'd buy your book in a heart beat. I'm at that point now, where I'm looking at all the different brands, models, HP ratings, 2WD vs 4WD, old antique vs newer import, loaders vs no loader etc, etc, etc. You are right, a well written book would be helpful and would probably sell well. ....

It might fall a little short of "Gone With The Wind" in sales, but certainly it should find a niche market. I'd be willing to help with what limited expertise I have. For example, a chapter on "How to flip a tractor back on top of yourself and go hunitng five weeks later", which I did to myself some years ago. Talk about luck... ....

Sounds like a worthwhile project. I could donate a chapter on places to get stuck. I seem to have found most of them, not just tractors but backhoes and bulldozers as well. ....

What a Novel Idea! My input would be for us (including "Mr Jplan.com") to chat with the guysat www.Turobdieselregister.com. This Bi-monthy publication is the resultof a few good guys with a common interest. In their case Turbo Diesel Pick-ups.In our case, Tractors. Mr "Jplan.com" also mentioned how this site costs him money for all of us to enjoy. This would be one way for everyone to benefit, while assistinghim financially to keep this site going and up to date. Speaking of that.. I think we all owe a big thanks to the guy who maintains this Site!.!.!.!.!. ....

This was actually my original idea, since my sole motivation is to end up with the book for my own edification. However, there will be lots of work involved and I have no wish to dictate how the contributors benefit from it. ....
