I was just at the dealer where I bought my 4300 and noticed they had a 4300 synchreverser and a 4400 synchreverser on the lot for sale, with bits still shrinkwrapped. No idea of the price, but my 4300 SRT equipped identically to the one on the lot (R-4, folding ROPS) came in at $18,700 with a 430 loader. The dealer is R. N. Johnson in Walpole, NH (www.rnjohnsoninc.com).

After much research and agonizing, I decided on a 4300 Synchreverser with 430 loader. In April I drove to R. N. Johnson in Walpole, NH and bought the one they had in their showroom. I had to wait 3 very painful days for them to top up the fluids, go through the delivery checklist, and wax it before they would deliver it. I guess that makes my delivery time 3 days. I'm upset, but I can live with it ;)<br>BTW, the sales manager pointed out that he wouldn't have been able to get me a HST until August...

I agree - these places cost money. This was actually my original idea, since my sole motivation is to end up with the book for my own edification. However, there will be lots of work involved and I have no wish to dictate how the contributors benefit from it. "> quot Real quot compact tractor book

The current level of engineering design on loaders for compacts from the major brands is impressive. I'll get it installed next service. You have to have a dual selective control valve to operate the loader (or do you mean an _additional_ one?) I live in New Hampshire, and my dealer said they'd be happy to do the coolant heater, but that it is completely unnecessary for New England winters, especially if the tractor is stored in a covered area (even in my unheated barn).<br>If you're willing to skip the hydro trans, you should be able to get a 4300 synch-reverser for the price of a 4200 hydro, and have some chance of getting it this year.

I hate to sound like an idiot, but in this I am...<br>I just got a Deere 4300 (my first tractor) 2 weeks ago, and a Bush Hog cutter delivered yesterday. It took me nearly an hour to get the two connected! The tractor manual says to hitch up an implement according to the implement manual, and the cutter manual says to refer to the tractor book for how to hook up the hitch. The cutter weighs about 600 lb, so I am totally unable to shift it around. I must have backed up to it zillions of time trying to get the draft links aligned with the pins. Eventually I resorted to dragging the cutter by the top link to get it as straight as I could then pounding the hitch arms onto the pins with a piece of wood and a maul.<br>I know one should

I faced exactly the same decision and settled on the 4300 synch-reverser. Besides having more PTO and pulling power, it can use the larger, more powerful 430 loader. While a hydrostatic transmission is convenient, the synch-reverser is hardly complicated. Neither I nor my wife has the slightest difficulty using it. If money were no object I probably would have gotten a 4600 HST. Since it is, and the choice came down to the one you face, I went with the larger SRT. It is important to drive both. If your dealer doesn't have both, go wherever you need to in order to try them. Either choice should get you a very usable tractor.

My JD 4300 was delivered a week ago. During my shakout drives I discovered that I was unable to move the hydraulic lockout lever. I called the dealer, who went out and tried on their 4400 and found the same problem. They called later to say

Later I went out and fiddled with it a lot. If I jiggle gently, sometimes it'll slide right up. No amount of force I can apply with both hands will make it move otherwise. When in the "locked" position a little change is seen - up/down loader operation is slowed but not disabled. Dumping/rollback does seem to be locked, as I can't move the DSCV right/left.
Has anyone else run into this?

How about things that mount on the FRONT, such as the front-mounted rotary brushes and snowblowers I mentioned? They mount on the mid PTO, and my sense is that unlike rear hitches, there isn't much of a mounting standard for mid- and front-mounted implements. Thus my concern that I may not find a number of manufactureres for those implements.

He recognizes a newbie when he sees one, and thought I should drive it around for a while then buy one implement at a time and use it before getting the next one. He also insists I won't get any better price now than down the road.
