 Size stick welder

What size and make stick machine do I need to weld quarter to half-inch steel? I am leaning toward the Hobart Stickmate LX 235AC/160DC. Rated: 100% duty cycle at 65 amps. It costs $420 with running gear and free shipping on the net. I have been told that the Hobart is a Miller Thunderbolt XL (same production line)with different paint for about 10% less. Is this size machine appropriate for small projects and attachment repair? What is the best on-line source for welding equipment?

Cap'n
Your machine will handle about anything you would need. However, I would recommend the Lincoln version. It can be bought for a little less, and is a whole lot more popular.

This is a an old post but the the Lincoln Welders do not have the fine adjustment for heat ranges since they just click in preset intervals. The Miller and Hobarts have a rotary crank to get you more tuned in the what heat/amp range you need. 6011,6013, and 7018 are the rods types I use depending on what I'm doing. The Lincoln welding book is the best I've read and is at Home Depot for 15 bucks. Store your rod in a sealed dry container or you will play Hades in in getting an arc especially 7018 rod.

True, but when home welding, and even in most industrial purposes, the presets are suitable. I also have found that these types last longer than the "infinitely adjustable" types due to the control mechanisms stripping out.
