I am looking to purchase a used JD or NH compact tractor. I have looked at all the new models for both lines but have determined they will not fit the budget.I am needing to know what used models prior to the current JD 4-00 and NH Boomer lines that would be comparable to the current JD 4600 or NH 45 today. I am interested in the a time period of within the past 10 years. I know that the Boomer line up started a few years ago as did the 4000 line in JD. My goal is a compact 40ish PTO horsepower tractor. Brush hogging and snow removal will be the main uses. If any one has a recommendation on a particular model from personal or indirect experience that would be most appreciated! Thanks for your help.

40 HP is actually quite a lot of tractor. I have a JD 950, 27 PTO HP. It will drive my 6' brush hog thru grass up to a foot or foot and a half with no problem. Higher than that I just have to slow down a little. It has a loader and box scraper that handles dirt quite well. Unless you have a lot of acreage, you may want to consider something slightly smaller. However, you may already know this and have already determined what is right for you. Anyway, my 2 cents worth. ....
