hand throttle will not stay where it's positioned anywhere above idle. foot thottle appears to function normally, anyboby know how the hand throttle is held where its put? I have looked at JDparts.com but I'm not clear as to how it works

Not sure from your post if it's a yannie or a JD, but on mine the hand throttle holds where set by a "friction disk" or "friction washer." It eventually glazes and loses its hold. Replacement not costly but you may have to remove panels to get at it. Or you could try removing the glaze.

There's also a "return spring" that weakens in time, that you might also want to replace though it's not causing the present problem. Also oil the moving bits but not the disk. ....
