How do I remove ivy that has been growing in an area for many years with out disturbing the irrigation lines that are under it. The ivy has very heavy roots about 1" dia and the area is only about 35 feet wide and 100 feet long. there are also several trees in this area that are to remain. doing it by had is not fun. any ideas?

Two (relatively) easy ways are 1) a landscape rake or 2) chain harrows, points down. Whichever method you use will require frequent stops to clear the implement of the accumulated vegetation, for this reason the rake will probably be the easiest of the two. Best of luck. ....

I suspect this will be an unpopular answer but what ever happened to chemical warfare?? A light mist of 2,4-d or roundup might very well do the trick with minimal damage to the surrounding vegitation. ....
