I have gears rather than HST, and HST's may be more particular. My Ford 1710 manual call for Ford/NH 134D, which is a pretty universal petro oil. It's too far for me to go to my NH dealer for oil, and it can't be couriered, so I use an equivalent from a much closer AGCO dealer. In either case, I wouldn't be using 134D but a multi-season oil because it gets very cold here.
I view petro hydraulic/transmission oil as pretty universal stuff that can go into most anything except for some older tractors that use gear oil. However, what ever is used should be intended for use in tractor hydraulic/transmission systems. Even so, nobody should recommend doing anything other than sticking with a manufacturer's recommendations over the net, and I'm not. Synthetics vs petro and HST vs gears may be different questions.

Like the hydralic oil in your automatic transmission the correct oil is necessary. Different oil may not affect the operation per say, but can affect the seals used in the hydralic system. The different rubbers, Bunna-N, Vition, silicon etc used can swell differently in the various oils or deteriate.
